87 Cannondale SR 400

Any idea what an 87 Cannondale SR 400 Team Comp is worth?

I read that it was their low end bike, has a harsh ride, and is ugly - but a desirable bike nonetheless. (Go figure!)

Anyway - I just picked one up on impulse from CL. It's dirty and needs rubber, otherwise it's in very good condition. It's a 6-speed with Suntour Alpha 3000 DR's, Sugino VP crank, Nitto stem, 3T Bars, Vetta saddle. The hubs are Maillard, rims are Mistrals.

In a bike-centric market like DC, maybe $300 with new rubber, wrap and cables. Sadly, that was not one of the more attractive colors in Cannondale's lineup that year (I should know, I have a 58 SR500 & a 60cm frame in the same color- ick). But the Alpha stuff is surprisingly crisp- not unlike 1st gen 105, the Sugino crank is very sweet, and the rest of the components are actually pretty darn good.

With a refinished frame in a nicer color, Shimano 600 FD/RD/DT shifters/Brakeset, you can bump it into the $550 range.

Bet it's got DiaCompe brakes and levers.

Thanks rccardr -
This is not the bicycle culture capital of the US, so I'll be looking for a bit less once I have it all spruced up. I won't go as far as to change the "mint" color. (Not the best with pinkish-red accents IMO. What were they thinking? I think I'll go with white housings and tape to tone it down a notch.)

And yes- it has Dia-Compe brakes and levers.

Around here, more like $225 to $250. Depends on the quality of the paint. During that era, I have seen a lot of crappy Cannondale paint (chips easily). Sounds like your paint is pretty decent condition wise.

...or you could just sell it to me without doing anything to it, thereby making what they used to call a "tidy armchair profit".

Bill - The paint is really excellent. (I guess I have to qualify that by saying the color is really gruesome! ).

rccardr - Actually it's one of those bikes then that will really clean up well, and for me, getting to work on nice bikes is the real reason why I buy and sell them, so I never flip anything before it's 100%.
The other flippers on this side of town are interested primarily in making a better profit by just giving it a bath, and sometimes not even that.

Well, just tell the potential buyer that this color is Cannondale's version of Celeste. Very rare.....

I sold that exact bike this past summer and received my asking price of $275 for it. The bike as I bought it came with tubulars, so I had to change the wheels to 700C clinchers, or I would have probably owned it forever. After putting on clinchers and a thorough tune up, I thought about changing the drivetrain to an indexed one, but took a shot at selling it as non-indexed, which I did. Bike was very light and accelerated very quickly. Buyer came, rode, bought and left. Just the kind that I like the best !

The only thing on the chain stay is the name, "Team Comp". The headtube has the RR station logo.
The bike measures about 24".

Nice pickup. The color is not that bad. I'm a big fan of subdued colors, but I'd definitely ride that

The bike sold new for around $400 in the late 80's.
