    Pics of the drive side would help. Condition means a lot with that bike.

    colligate4.jpgcolligate.jpgcolligate2.jpgcolligate5.jpgcolligate3.jpg here are some pics of the bike. sorry about the quality thats why i took multiple. there is basicall rust spotting on the handlebars, rims, fenders, and crank arm. not to much on body though. mostly all mechanics are working though. it says that it was made in chicago also if that helps.

    Minimal value in current state. If you have the tools/time/aptitude/interest in working on it, and are VERY careful with your spending, you can flip it. Otherwise, best to sell it as is, as a project, to someone who has the list I mentioned above.

    As a flip, it is at best marginal. Collegiates go OK, but the ladies style sell much lower than the equivalent mens style.

    All the Schwinn catalogs are on line, all the Schwinns are dated, serial numbers are actually meaningful, etc. Looks like early 1970s to me. Google it and you will find all the information.

    There are endless threads on handling rust. Do a search of this forum on oxalic acid. But unless it is a keeper, you might not want to mess with it.

    This will let you know what everybody else is asking for them...

    Try scrubbing off the rust with CLR. Worse comes to worse, a very wet and soapy Brillo pad and a good rinse will do it. The steel wool routine is not the best thing for the chrome finish, but it works. As far as rebuilding them, you can't find an easier bike to work on..."piece of cake".

    I bought these two Collegiates for a combined $15: the green three-speed at a yard sale for $10 two summers ago, the blue coaster at garage sale last summer. I was lucky...but this is not unusual in the Detroit suburbs.

    The green one belongs to my daughter, and we'll never sell it. The blue coaster I sold for $125. But that bike was just about perfect.

    Around here you'd be lucky to get more than $10 for it.

    Yes, it would. It would enhance the value greatly to restore the bike to near-original condition, which is how I got my asking price for that coaster. It didn't look like it does in the photo when I got it. Despite hanging on a wall in a garage for most of its life, it was still covered in grime and and the chrome had light rust everywhere. Use oxalic acid to remove the rust -- or Barkeeper's Friend, which contains oxalic acid. Search the C&V forum for threads on oxalic acid and rust removal, there is plenty there to get you started. Clean the fenders, bars, wheel rims, hubs, spokes, spoke protector, brake calipers, nuts, bolts, trim, everything.

    New tires are a must. And I can't quite tell -- is that a violet frame with a green and white seat? Try finding a matching seat. I may have one myself. Let us know.

    i just went out and got some evapo-rust i have asked my local body shops and home depot about oxalic acid and they all looked at me like i was crazy and recomended this. if this is a bust i will have to continue to look for oxalic acid. do you know where i could buy some? or perhaps barkeepers friend? i have been using the evapo-rust on other things and it seems to work very well. would the evapo rust work on chrome? or steel?
    let me know thanks.

    Search is your friend. There are at least a couple of hundred threads on oxalic acid, everything from where to buy it, what concentration to use, neutralization, disposal, does it affect paint, decals, etc.

    Go to google, and enter: oxalic acid site:bikeforums.net

    On your other question, no one really wants to buy rusty bikes, it can reduce value to just about nothing, depending on how much, how serious, etc.

    The serial is on the head tube or rear drop out. It can tell you age. First letter is month A=Jan second is year F=1970. I and O are not used. That bike looks like a little elbow greease and some polish (maybe a brillo pad) will clean it up real nice. Try www.bunchobikes.com.

    Barkeeper's Friend is sold at my local supermarket, Kroger; at Home Depot; at the local family-owned hardware. The only place I have found oxalic acid -- white powder in a sealed plastic tub -- is the local ACE Hardware. Others buy it online in bulk.
