I was just wondering if I have put to high of price on my three bikes for sale .
86 Miyata 110 58 cm - 250.00
Gardin Race Bike 53 cm - 250.00
79 Phillips road bike 23 inch -55.00

also iam selling a 89 Fiori road bike in 53 cm for 150.00

i have listed these bike on CL with no bites any changes in prices would be appreciated to help sell theses bikes!!

1. Post links to your ads. A BIG PART of selling is marketing. Lots of critics here (me included). A bike poorly marketed might languish for $X. While the same bike well marketed might sell quickly at $2X. I have benefited frequently on such market inefficiency.

2. Where are you located? I live in "Hooterville". OK, its not really Hooterville, but its close. Here I can not dream of getting prices that some others see. If you want a national market, you have to go ebay (and get all the hassles that go with it).

4. The Fiori needs some polishing compound and probably some touch up. If it looks like a project, only people looking for smokin' hot deals are going to be interested (at least around here). Smokin' hot deals around here cap off at about $100, unless it is something really special.

5. A lot of buyers just recognize a couple of brands (around here that is Trek, Schwinn, Peugeot and Bianchi). Everything else gets ignored. I picked up a Puch Saturday, I could not believe it was still available (low price). But the brand combined with less than stellar marketing kept the interest low.

6. Little details matter if you are trying to catch someone's eye. Bartape in a contrasting color. Brake and shifting housings that match (and both in the same color), polished and shined up, etc. Black bikes can really pop with some creativity.

That 110 presents well, but its a low end bike, and would take me a while to get that price (I could not get it here). But in hotter markets, people do get that price. The other two, assuming they are ready to ride, could sell at those prices.

I have been on both ends on marketing. I like to think I am pretty good at it, but sometimes, I am not. I recently sold a vintage sweater on ebay for $200. I thought I did pretty good, but my ad wasn't the greatest. Two weeks later, someone sold the EXACT same sweater, with a kickass ad on ebay fo $560.....

One strange thing about market price, its really hard to get! Bikes in general sell BELOW market, occasionally one sells at market, and rarely does it sell for more than market. Thats on C/L. Ebay is the land of variation. Sometimes things go red hot, other times, not. I picked up a nice cromoly lugged frame mixte, with all alloy components, in great shape, for $50 off ebay two months ago. WTF?

Several people on this list, probably me the most, will share with people what the market value is for their bike. But its not like you can take it to your local bank, and they will pay you "market" price. I wish obtaining market price was easy.


I would do a lot of things first BEFORE lowing prices.

Thanks wrk101 for the great info. i will try and put a better description of parts and tubing with the bikes . and see where that gets me.. Thanks agian . i will post a pic of the phillips when i can !

As usual, Bill gives great advice and real-world examples to back it up.

I would say that the Miyata might be a tad high, but maybe not if you are in 'Frisco. In St. Louis, maybe $175.00 and you might have to wait awhile. The other two, depends upon condition. The Fiori is interesting to my eyes. The Phillips I'd have to see a pic of. The Gardin I'm not familiar with, I'll have to Google it. Pretty bike, way too small for me though!

That Gardin looks nice and has bar end shifters and Columbus tubing. It should sell for your asking price at least, if not more.
