Andy Hampsten Team Issue Motorola Ti Eddy Merckx frame/fork
Talking with a local fellow about a frame/fork and told me he had something else if I was interested. I said sure what do you have? He said he has a Motorola team issued Ti Eddy Merckx built for Andy Hampsten but never used. Purchased from the team a few years ago. He has the build tag and other paper work also to go along with the frame. Now this is usually more then I deal with given the price. This would be a flipper as it would be a nice conversation piece but conversation pieces don't pay the bills.
The magic price is $2000 including the other frame/fork that was $250. He said he had it appraised and got a crazy quote of around $6k but even he was leary on that price. He was told from quite a few other local rider of around the 2200-2600 price range. Is this something I could make a profit? I was going to list it just as the frame/fork as the rest of the parts were just things he added after he purchased it so have no ties to Andy Hampsten. Would selling it as a complete bike be more of a selling point with the Campy Chorus 9spd gruppo? Help!
Fat Guy on a Little Bike
Sheesh...well...I think you could potentially see a LARGE fluctuation on this one. You need VERY established provenance and you need to get lucky with the right collector. When I tested the waters with my Team Merckx most were tossing out numbers I'd have never considered. The best offer I got, and which I considered fair, was $2,500 for the frame, fork and saddle (a Merckx panto saddle). Is this less or more valuable than mine? Beats me! I don't even remember a ti Motorola bike and thought hampsten's "light weight climber" was 753.
If you're looking for a flip, my guess is that's too high.

I'll probably hold off as it a bit of a gamble and not something I feel comfortable selling without more solid info. I was able to find him trying to sell it last year at 2500 and no bites on. He even received some info he didn't know so right there makes me more leary on what he actually has or fully knows about it. I found this searching around of the seller after someone found it on CL a year ago.
Lance won the World Championship Road Race on a Ti Motorola bike in '93 - the frame was built for Merckx by Lighhtspeed.

This has me wondering out loud about who gets the world champ stripes for the bike? Merckx? Litespeed? In times past small builders like Masi who built the World Champ winning frame but who did not get their name shown were still claiming the "win" What about the more recent past? And today, are we going to see some little known Chinese or Taiwan mfg. applying World champ stripes to their own brand frames?
