Another Bad Decision! Should I Have Walked Away from These 2 Fujis?
I admit it; I've made some bad bike buying decisions recently. Some of which I haven't posted in fear of embarassment. When pictures of a chrome lugged Fuji appeared on Craigslist, I responded immediately. The chrome fork and lugs were evident in the photograph, but the rust was not. The bike was listed for $100 and I quickly responded. When I arrived, I was disappointed by the condition of the bike. When he called, he also said that he had several other bikes so I looked at them. On the second bike (a Fuji Royale), I saw some components I could use for another rebuild so I made an offer of $120 on two bikes. He countered and I refused. Eventually, he agreed to the $120, and I loaded up the bikes. On my drive back, I got angry with myself for not walking away.
Please tell me if I've made a bad decision. If I did, I must be stopped. I can't afford to keep making bad decisions. Should I be banned from Craigslist? Also, with the chrome lugged Fuji, can someone help me identify it? Also, is the fork a replacement? Thanks. The chrome lugged bike looks pretty cool, I bet an OA bath will clean it up pretty well.
I'd take it for $60.00, I'm not so sure on the Royale though with the rust coming through the paint. |
I agree, whatever the chrome on it looks like it has potential. what kind of hubs are those? isn't Crane a fore runner of DA?

Yep, Crane is predicessor to Dura Ace. Chrome Fuji was a decent buy, the Royale, not so much. Fork and headset are not original, nor are the Crane RD, the brake levers and calipers, and several other parts.
The Chrome Fuji looks like an early to mid 1970s Fuji Finest. Very little of the components appear to be original. If the Finest had the original fork and a tad less rust, it alone would have more than carried this deal. And since you needed some of the parts off the Royalle, sounds like you are covered. |
Hey, I paid $120.00 for 1 Fuji Finest. I think you did fine, as long as you can do your own work.

Thanks everyone for your feedback! I recognize that I'm in over my head on the Finest (I wish it had the original fork). I paid $100 for the Finest and $20 for the Royale. The Royale had a few components that I wanted and I would have paid that much on ebay. I'm still undecided on what I'm going to do with the Finest. As always, your help is appreciated!

Like others have said...you got a good deal on both. if nothing else, you can use the Royale as a "back up" or a "go everywhere" bike. (Meaning=if there's some place you dont want to take your Finest, this might be a good option).

Depending on demand within your market, a nicely cleaned up Fuji frame alone could bring $50 and the wheels another $35+. That would leave you with the "Finest" (?), the better set of wheels and some spare components for $35 net cash outlay + some work. If you go that route, make sure everything is in order ... trued, lubed, cleaned, touched up. The Royale is one notch below an S-12-S, but pretty decent. Probably from about 1980. If it was done right, the "Finest" looks nicely updated. I'd have it apart, cleaned and rebuilt in a few leisurely evenings. Personally, I'd go with the SunTour derailleur (may need to drop a few links after you remove the chain to clean it) from the Royale. Hold onto the Crane. Hey, this is a hobby that produces some neat bikes for us to enjoy riding. It is also a fairly low-budget hobby...at least I think it is for most of us.
