Trek 400 vs Centurion ironman expert. which is the better bike?
theres two bikes on cl, the trek 400 and ironman expert. trek has the sekae triple crank, ironman expert has 105 components. both are $200 each. I hope the ironman is the better bike.

Ironman is better for fast, unloaded riding. Trek 400T is better for touring or riding on dirt roads. I fit 38mm CX tires on my old Trek 400T.

Both are a really good deal if they are ready to ride. Just pick the one that fits the best/is geared the way you want.
Myself, the Trek would be the choice.

Trek looks to be a size larger than the Ironman though pics can be deceiving. The Ironman is a nice bike at a good price, not a steal, but not bad, assuming good condition. It showed up on the radar of at least a couple of us Centurion fans on the forum...though neither of us is on it someone else likely is, so if you want it go get it NOW!
If there's any way you can afford it, and both are in good condition, buy them both and compare them. Both should be re-sellable at the price you paid plus a bit maybe.

the trek looks more like a Sport tourer to me than a real touring bike. the chainwheels on the trek look prety big, I would not be suprised if it was a 30 something 42/52T set up like a Bianchi Eros. I think which bike is faster a moot point for a novice. the size between the two is more important.
personally if they were equal in price and size I would say take the trek for its versatility.

I agree with most of the folks above, the Trek is a good choice. Actually, the suggestion to buy both and ride them awhile and decide which to keep is a good one if you can afford it. You shouldn't have any issues getting rid of the one you don't want.
How often are you going to be going fast? Is it really an issue? Both bikes are very nice and the price is right. I agree with Bianchigirll, the Trek offers more options.

Other things I remember about my Trek 400T : super comfy, smooth ride. BB area a little spongy, not the funnest bike to do standing sprints on.
Could even make it a budget CX bike if you sourced a cheap 9-sp rear wheel and brifters.

The ironman was sold, but the trek 400 is still is still for sale. well today I bought a trek 1200 aluminium 1993 in grey for $200. I cleaned it up and adjusted everything the way I like it. it rides good but today I only road to the convenience store got two 24oz budwiesers put them in the bottle cages and headed home. I believe I got a better bike for $200, the ironman and trek 400 both were selling for $200 each. I will post pics of all my bikes soon.

I think the Ironman was the best deal, but I like steel bikes that are on the racy side.
I remember those early 90s 1000s and 1200s being a might harsh.

the trek 1200 does feel different. this is my first aluminum road bike, is there anything I should know about this bike? I do know its not as comfy ride like my raliegh gran prix is. but I guess I will get used to it.
