Appraisal time... is this Paramount worth the asking price?

Browsing the market and looking round. I found this one on the 'Bay. Looks nice and the right size. But it has some rust issues I think. Is the asking price on point? I'm thinking a repaint is gonna cost a pretty penny.

Yes, but just barely. The TT cable guide rust issue can be resolved, here's why its barely worth the $750....

    1. Campagnolo clincher rims $$$$
    2. Dura Ace STI levers $$$$
    3. Dura Ace aero seat post $$$
    4. With the exception of the pedals and maybe the headset it has a complete Dura Ace group. Even the skewers are Dura Ace.
    5. Waterford frameset
    6. Small size
    7. Its all there, no need to scour around for parts

Figure it'll need a complete rebuild with cables and tires.

I bet it needs a chain, FW or cassette and a small ring too

Unless you can pick it up, just smile and wave and avoid this auction. This seller has had a string of ebay handles, if you look you can find them without too much trouble. Kalvin811, buybicycle911 or something close to that and more. There is a reason for this, his business practices and descriptions are less than reputable, his feedback eventually takes a dive, then he uses another account, then returns to a prior "clean" account with a new moniker. Unless you gamble in Vegas and always come back with more than you arrived, I suggest you pass.

Interesting comments... and thanks for the heads up! I see the shipping @ $90 so that makes a big mark up in the end. I agree about the being a fairly complete bike but the rust makes me wonder what condition the components are really in.

Pass, Pass, Pass. At that price, for a 1980s vintage Paramount, it should be pristine.

"Minor paint bubbling", what a hoot! How about the word "RUST" instead. I would not trust this seller.

Bubble, Bubble toil and trouble; Fire burn, and caldron bubble...
    With apologies to Billy.

I guess I'm the olnyo ne who's leaning in favor of it being a fair price....

If you were to build this bike from scratch what would it cost?

    STI levers: $150
Wheelset w/o cassette and tires: $125
    Seat post: $75
    Seat: $40
Bars and stem $60 (could be more considering Paramount branding)
    Crankset w/ dust caps: $60
    BB: $30
    FD: $15
    RD: $45
    Headset: $50

Thats $660 and without considering what the framesets worth and considering other intagibles like tires, a chain, cassette, cables etc. Can a similar bikes be found for less? Yes. Can similar bikes in better condition be found for less? Yes.

With this particular bike a prospective buyer needs to ask themself a few question:

Can I build a similar bike for less? In this instance maybe....maybe not.
Am I OK with the rusty cable guide? The rest of the frame looks good so it seems as if the rust is isolated and my gut feeling is it can cleaned up.

    Additional questions to be answered:
Will the bike be packed well enough?
    Is the frame straight?
Is the chain / cassette wasted?
    Are the STI levers functional?
This seller has a habit of not imaging the most pressing problems, and dodging them well. Yes, the rust on the top tube was shown, but what about the condition elsewhere? A number of ebay sellers provide lots of images except the most critical ones. Look at the 57 cm Carlsbad Masi currently on auction by another... find the reasonable detail image that shows the "nail" for the pump peg up forward and or an image of the upper head lug... often it is as critical what is not imaged as what is. Look over the other images and find what else is wrong, not commented on, but left in plain site for you to judge or miss...
