Trek 400 Elance - 531 goodnes
Bout to put her up to sell.
As much as I've always liked the Trek lugs and the fact its bout my size I'm going to let this one move along.
I think its an 87 but haven't gotten into the serial numbers yet.
I'm thinking I'll set the bar high on this one and see what happens.
Whadya think? $375?
Reynolds 531
54cm
nice shiny metallic blue paint
nice lugs
52/40 x 6 speed rear
Room for 700x28 or more

I think I am real glad it is not my size. I really like the detail on these frames.

yeah, the only ones with better detail I think are the full 531 (700 series) with lugs at the fork ends and trek name on BB shell as well.

I would start a little higher. I sold my Blue 400D for $450 this spring. Mine had fenders, a new Brook saddle and an upgraded drivetrain. Still, the overall condition of your bike in excellent and might draw $400+.

The build is as it came from the factory. I suppose I could swap it all to Shimano 600 from a Schwinn Super Sport with bad paint... Hmmm
I wish I could fall in love with every bike that rolls through in my size but, alas, I have to be content.

- I think there are strong regional bias' for Treks at work here:
I have seen Reynolds Treks command more than Columbus Bianchi's time and again around here, and have approached that same figure even for Reynolds 501 in the past.
Of course, these days I have to discount everything deeply, but I doubt that this is the case in Chicago or Calif.

Like I said, I'm shooting the moon and seeing where it lands.
I'm actually thinking it may be a nice touch to replace all but the brake levers with the set of 600 components I have here. Nice engraved logo versions I have sitting around. Would really dress up such a nice looking frame. Could be worth it.
Would prefer to sell locally but have been ok shipping bikes in the past.

I think Trek pricing has a lot to do with if you are in an area that has or had a strong manufacturing industry. Areas like Detroit, Chicago,Ohio and Pittsburgh. People raised on buy American will pay a bit more for Trek's and Schwinn's.

And in some cases a lot more.
(It does not hurt that these old steel Treks are of such stellar quality that they compare favorably to any other bike - regardless of cost.)

Collectors will want something more unique and others might want something more modern. But there is a large market for a good sports/touring bike.

I just picked up an 87 400T Elance in similar condition for $250 from a friend.
I see a major rebuild in its future.
