I'm hopefully going to pick up two 1970's ross road bikes, in great condition, for my wife and I. It's only 100$ all together. I've read that the American made Ross bikes (which these are) are of pretty good quality.

Is this a good buy? I'm not looking for anything to serious, just a nice bike for excercise and leisure.

I've never read that. Ross made a variety of bikes, mostly really low end (some really crappy), and a couple of decent or nicer bikes. Without pictures, no idea. But at the $50 pricepoint, you aren't going to find much, so if they are ready to ride, why not. If they need much work, the cost of the work will exceed the value of the finished bike.

On made in USA, Huffy, Murray and Columbia bikes were all made in USA, and 99% of what they made was junky. Made in USA is no guarantee of whether bike was decent.

I did a good deal of homework, these were the last generation of American Made Ross bikes (frames made in allentown, and assembled in Brunswick NJ. They we're in really good riding shape, some things needed adjusting and tightening. I bought them from a much older fellow who claimed he bought them for His son and daughter in 1974 for 170$ a piece. I was able to get him down to 40 each for the bikes (the mens bike needs a new brake cable for the left side) but I have that on hand already, I'm certain for the price there isn't anything that comes close to the value for 80$
