i just bought a miyata sport 10 in pretty decent condition. i bought it slightly impulsively as i need a bike for the moment. someone one CL offered me this centurion cavaletto for $260 with new shifter & brake cables and housings, saddle, bar wrap, tires , and new inner tubes. im wondering if it is any better than the miyata or around the same quality? it seems slightly better condition than the miyata and it definitely is more aesthetically appealing... all i know is that its a low end model from the 80s. im not sure if its any lighter.
I am all for upgrading, I do it all of the time. My advice is to make bigger steps, otherwise, its not worth the hassle of buying and selling. Bigger step = DT shifters, name brand cromoly frame, forged dropouts, alloy crankset, alloy wheelset (preferably 700c), alloy bars, stem and seat post.
Every market is different, around here, $260 gets you a really good bike, one several steps above that Cavaletto.
Tips on finding a nice bike.
1. Educate yourself first, so you can easily spot one.
2. Know your size, and be able to estimate size from a crappy picture.
3. Move fast and pounce when you see what you want. Do not wait!!
