Old Raleigh on CL --- Worth it?

Is this worth the $50 the guy is asking? It is a really pretty bike...

It depends on if you can do the work it needs, it'll need a full servicing of all bearings, probably cables, tires, tubes.

    Should clean up beautifully though.

Is it worth it? Yes. Is it a good deal for you? Only if you have the tools/time/aptitude/interest to rebuild it. The cost to rebuild at a LBS will cost more than the bike is worth.

At this price level, you should expect to find bikes that need work ("projects"). Projects can be a great value if you do the work yourself, as most buyers want bikes ready to go and have no imagination.

The bike is a Raliegh Sprite that is about 35 years old. They came with steel cottered cranks and steel rims. They are nice riding bikes that shared the same frame as the Raleigh Record, but give you the upright riding position of a Raleigh Sports (an earlier version actually shared the same frame with the Sports) . If you pursue it, make sure it fits you and that there is no frame damage and that the wheels aren't plagued with hops (spin the wheel and the rim goes up and down over the brake pads). It would be nice with a Brooks B-72 leather saddle and rear rack. If it isn't in too bad of shape, $50 is not a bad price ... maybe $40 to $45 since it doesn't have a saddle, or maybe he has it on hand to give to you if you ask. These bikes came with Brooks mattress saddles that weren't all that great. It may need tires... 27" x 1 1/4" tires can be had online for as low as $6 each + S&H.

I ended up not going for it, as the seller wanted to meet in a pretty rough part of town, and was otherwise giving me the runaround. I'll keep my eyes open for something similar, though. My wife really liked this one.
