Dad's 197x Raleigh

Really not looking to sell it, just get it IDd so I can start rebuilding it. It was my Dad's bike through most of college and I'm hoping I'll ride it sometime as mine.

He left it in a shed behind our house for as long as I can remember. I don't ever remember him riding it. So it's been in the elements for a while. I recently dug it out and started stripping the paint on it. Turns out there's chrome under there....

Based on the location of the SN on the rear dropout. It's either a Grand Prix, Super Course, or Grand Sports. (Thanks https://www.sheldonbrown.com/). What's throwing me is the handlebar end shifters aren't in ads until the '77 model. (Unless it was optional).

Edit: Just got an e-mail from my dad:
Bike I got from rugby team mate @ U of GA in Sept 1976. Raleigh I thought ... aluminum frame ...? Had cheesy silver paint job when I got .... I think to look unattractive @ university bike racks. I think just lower ends of forks are chrome? That's all I know about it. Rides well, light & easy, when tuned up! Too skinny seat & low handlebars for me now anyway.

too bad you didn't take pics before you took the paint off.

the shifters could have been added later

lots of better bikes had chroming under paint back then. it mainly helped prevent corrosion but it was also susposed to make the frame stiffer from the chemical process

Most of your pics are too small to get much of an ID from. However, this pic shows a stamped rear drop out which only the Super Course and Grand Prix were equipped with. The Grand Sports were forged.

None of this era's Raleigh frames were made from aluminum.

The serial number appears to be 0208440. If so, I believe that makes it from 1973. Can you confirm the serial number?

It is 0208440.
Only the handlebars are aluminium.

The paint was the 5th or 6th coat. I think the last layer I went through was sky blue.
