Schwinn PDG getting some respect?

Looking at a patriotic Schwinn PDG 90 MTB purely for flipping. Not completely original (suspension fork, ugly seat, ugly seatpost). It's also a MTB so it's not as competitive as a road bike. Prices on eBay seem hopeful but still not sure. Any advice? Bite if under $100?

I have seen a couple on ebay recently listed BIN for 850 to 1000 but not selling. One sold last week for around 250. They are a good riding bike and I have one. For 100 I would say you cannot go wrong. Also as a piece of advice, check for cracks where the seat stays meet the seat tube.

To me, missing the original fork is a deal killer. Still might be worthwhile as a part out (although a lot of mtb parts get very little respect).

Even road bikes missing the original fork take a serious haircut. You are seeking the collector market, and collectors want a complete original frameset.

I'm going to hmm haw on this for a while. I was disappointed about the fork too.

Does the frame have an inherent flaw at the seat stay seattube junction?

Don't know about any flaws. I owned a PDG30 that was a fantastic bike. Beautiful "spider" paint, black with white lines running through it. I sold it because it was too small for me. It also had a suspension fork added to it. Sold it for $160.00 in perfect running condition. If I had it today, I'd hold out until I could get a bit more.
BTW, yours is the top-end model in PDG mountain bikes.

+1

My problem is when an old MTB shows up on CL with a janky new RST (or similar) fork. I already passed up one PDG because of that. I don't mind a non-original fork, but when it gets replaced with crap it kills the value for me.

I also passed up another PDG in a trade because it had a full Suntour 7-speed group on it. I don't like parting stuff out, so the parts weren't worth anything to me. Once the cassette wears out then what do I do? Now the bike needs a new rear hub, and probably a RD and shifter if I want it to index.

$100 for that bike does not sound like a deal unless you plan to part it out. It will probably cost more than it's worth to bring up to a good value. In great original shape it's probably only worth $250-$300.

Lots are good, lots are bad. At least Rock Shox is a good name. What model is it (Quadra, Mag21, SID, Judy, etc.)?

Incidentally, "PDG" refers to the "Paramount Design Group,' and as such, refers to Paramounts built in both Asia and at Waterford, as well as some aluminum models. Obviously, Waterford Paramounts have long "gotten respect."

No idea. He just said Rock Shox. And like most Craigslist pictures, it was blurry.

I wasn't aware that PDG also encompassed Waterford. I thought it referred to Japanese manufacturers exclusively.

It's a very common misconception.
The word that distinguishes the Asian steel Paramounts is "Series," followed by a number.

Ah that makes sense then. Then there's a possibility that some PDG bikes could have been made in Waterford. That would be something.

It's not a possibility, it's a reality. There are plenty of Waterford-built Paramounts out there that have PDG decals on the top tube. It was routine at one point. They were just regular production Waterford Paramounts. If you see the "PDG" decal and no "Series X" decal, it's probably a Waterford bike - the serial number will tell the tale.
