I know it's neither classic nor vintage, but. . .

    CV forum is the best.

So the wife wants a bike. I really really really wanted to find a nice 54 or 56cm C-dale 2.8 but this popped up on the Ebay and I'm not sure if it's worth it or not (considering complete ones go for around $500-ish, but I don't have 500-ish at the moment)

on the surface it looks OK, but I am sure a professional repainting cost more than $150 so something may be amiss. next the frame and shipping is $200 so that leave $300 to build it to be under a $500 cap. if you have parts on hand to build it it could be a decent deal but if you need to buy wheels, cranks, etc you can easily go way over $500

    Or this:

But "vintage" carbon is. . . somewhat more scary, or am I overly paranoid?

with glued/screwed type carbon frame you do need to be a bit careful, I am not sure I would buy one long distance.

want to drive to Knoxville and get a classicish steel ride? http://knoxville.craigslist.org/bik/2569426661.html

Selling my original RB-2... Bike is in good shape but hasn't been ridden in years. Paint is good, some chips in it. The size is a 56. Here is a link to the bike

Yeah I just paid exactly $150 to have a frame stripped and PC'ed.

I have enough parts (less wheels @ 130mm and a stem) to build a nice roadie. . .

I had a Specialized Epic exactly like that. I really enjoyed it, but sold it out of fear (I'm paranoid too...) and to upgrade to a nicer aluminum bike. I would NOT buy one on ebay though. It would have to be in perfect shape, and clearly that one is not. It could be compromised and you would have no idea until you got it all built up and hear it creaking or something.
Why "derailer" is the correct way to spell the gear-change mechanism: sheldonbrown.com/derailer.html
