    Please take a look at this craigslist posting and tell me if it is worth it

    I'm getting this bike for my brother, and I want to know if it is a good deal...

    Would it be uncomfortable/impossible to ride on the hoods? It's just bare metal...

    Should the rust on the frame be a significant concern? Does the rust look like it would compromise the integrity of the frame? Does anything look wrong with the bike? Does the poster seem legitimate? He/she claims to be a mechanic. I'm not really liking the placement of the brake levers on the handlebars, or the length of the rear brake cable at the rear (too long?).

    The bike doesnt look bad in the picture, but only get if you were going to restore it and paint it, as is the bike wouldnt be good to keep that way. Make sure wheels are true and not bent. Best thing to do is see it in person, and see if you can negotiate the price a little offer $80 instead

    If you love french bikes go for it. $100 sounds fair but no more.

    The rust seems superficial and the seller seems honest and adept. Whether $100 is a fair price is a tricky question. The wheelset is desirable and appears in good shape IMHO. I’m not as familiar with 70’s bikes as I am with 80’s, but my general opinion is to make an offer. Sellers will often put up a hope-for price, but will take a reasonable offer. If there are no dents in the frame and it’s straight, it seems like a perfectly rideable bike. It needs a good going over by a C&Ver.

    If you are buying to ride then I think it's definately woth it, as long as it fits your brother. It's equiped respectably and should perform very well for the money.

    There are a few forum members here with Juenet 620s, and they speak favorably about the ride quality. The "Nervex-like" lugs are cool, as is the hand painted details/pinstripping. Too bad the paint seems to be in pore condition with surface rust, but that can be remedied with some work. In the bay area, it's hard to find any decent bikes for that price. If it fits, I'd vote worth it.

    if the wheels are relatively true go for it they are worth 75 at least...jeunets are very well regarded if somewhat of a cult status,not your average ride and many of the parts look to be original,,not the rear der, or wheelset but both are probably upgrades...if you were to get a stronglight 49 crank and bb would really classs things up though the 3 arm chromed steel cottered crank has its own appeal..100 is fair,you will be insulting the seller and the the time and care he has put into it ....just don't waste too much time

    I could part that bike out for quite a bit more than $100 if done right. I think it's a good deal for the package.

    $75+ worth of wheels
    $40+ worth of derailleurs
    $25+ worth of brakes
    $50+ worth of frame

    Go get it, if it fits.

    Jeunets are good bikes . The frames are a little whippy , but the handling, thanks to a long wheelbase, is very good and stable . All seem to have paintissues . I'm planning on restoring one when the weather turns nice

    I am no expert on French bikes but restore what? I think it looks pretty original, but could use a good detailing. is this bike to be a rider or is the OP intending to flip? for a rider the idea of painting a midlevel carbon steel bike seem expensive to to at $200+ for a professional job. if the OP wanted to mask off the decals and try and clean up and paint the bad areas that would be a better plan.

    In San Fran, I'm surprised this bike is still available. 100$ is fair, seller reads as knowledgeable and up front (for example, he does not claim the bike is 531, common with this model). As several have posited out, worth more as parts.

    Good deal? Sure. Should be gone already.

    BUT, given the tone of your questions, I am not sure this bike is good for you. It is a project, needs some serious TLC. Projects are best suited for people with the time/tools/aptitude/interest to do all the work for themselves.

    Assume the bike will need work. If you are ready for it, then it is a good deal. If not, it is not a good deal.

    In a hot market like SF, I am surprised to see any non-XMart bike for $100.

    To a handy buyer with some tools, just the wheels and derailleurs cover the price. I would be more than happy to pay $100 for that bike here in Hooterville. San Fran prices tend to be 2X to 3X higher than here.

    I have to a agree with most here that the bike is a good if not great deal for the Bay area. I'm surprised it hasn't sold yet a bike like this would normaly sell in that market for twice the price. In the late spring early summer maybe more. The only question would be the frame size which is on the smaller side for a mans bike.

    IMO, the time and effort to get it "looking good" would be very high. The rust alone on the frame merits a re-paint. The components, other than the brakes, are low end. If you know how to paint a frame, it may be worth a restore. If not, I wouldn't touch it. It's too rough to be worth $100. If your brother doesn't mind riding it in as-is condition, you might offer $75, KDO it and pass it along.

    On a "Whats it worth? Appraisals and Inquiries" forum, I think it is all about the money. Further, the OP's basic question was: "I want to know if it is a good deal."

    Now if this bike had some special sentimental value, then it is definitely not about the money.


    Realestvin7 is justifying his appraisal, with a quick thumbnail on parts value. Realize that on some bikes, the parts are worth more than the whole. On bikes with mediocre frame condition (like this one), that is often the approach I use. However, while that approach gives insight into why someone might buy this bike, it does not mean it is a good deal for the OP.

    If you are not ready to take on a fair amount of work, it would be MUCH cheaper to pay more for something in "ready to ride" condition.

    It's a '70s campus bike in ride-away condition. Don't over think this. The rubber looks good, the cables look good, it's clean, it even has new handlebar tape and a good saddle, and the damage to the finish, typical for a 40 year-old bike, is patina. In my book, that's a good deal for $100. I see a lot of $200 Craigslist bikes come into the shop needing another $200 of work to make them ride-able.

    And you can find generic hoods on ebay or amazon for $10 or so, or your local shop can order them.
