    80's Basso Gap. I think its overpriced.

    Hey All. here is a link to a 1980's Basso I am really interested in. I will be looking at it this weekend to see how it fits. Just wanted you peeps opinions on how much I should pay for this bike. I feel its a bit overpriced, but not by much...

    I'm not big on the Tubular tires though. If I did purchase it I will use the tubies till they are toast, then switch out for the same pair of tubies I have laying around from basically the same rim i took them off.

    My plan is to eventually switch this bike to some 8 or 9 spd 105's I have laying around and putting some 700c clinchers on.

    This will be my rain bike/ mass training bike. Tired of using my race bike just to have to replace everything more often than I like too. Being in the northwest it rains... everyday, shoot its raining right now!.

    Were it mine to sell, I wouldn't go below $500. A top of the line steel frame with very good parts. Here in Toronto, I think it would sell at $600.

    Rather than subjecting this nice bike to that, why not just get a used aluminum frame/carbon fork deal with Sora/Tiagra/105 for about the same price?

    Price seems about right for this bike. I would say this bike would be worth even more if it a matched instead of mixed components of the same level.

    Because this bike NEEDS to be ridden. It wants it. It wants to be free. Plus, any aluminum bike in this price range SUCKS to ride and is not comfortable. I ride 15 hrs per week. Average ride is 3 hrs and atleast once a week ride 5 hrs strait. This steel bike will be the perfect ride for 5 hrs plus. I will be Soooo comfortable. PLus chains are cheaper for 6 spds than 10 spds, cassettes are super cheap for them. And everything on this bike will last a very long time. Cant go wrong.

    +1 Although that bike is a mix of components, it is a reasonable deal. I do not think it is overpriced at all. Sorted out with matching components, it would be worth more.

    Of course, Craigs List is where buyers and sellers should EXPECT offers. So I would offer $500 if it looks as good in person as it does in the ad. Any defects, adjust offer accordingly.

    I don't see anything in the listing that says it is a Gap and he's non-commital on the tubing type. There's no visible tubing decal, so I wouldn't rule out the possibility of it being a late 1980's Paris-Rounbaix with Matrix/Cromor tubing. It's a Frankenbike, so it's hard to tell from the components but the derailleurs, brakes and crankset are all more in line with a mid-range model like the Paris-Roubaix. Could be either.

    Went and test rode it today. Very comfortable. I was surprised to find it rode like my vocal madrone 5.2. But I don't think it will work because I will still have to jack the seat up and then the bar drop will probably be around 4 inches. I am looking at custom frame options with a local frame builder. (1200 for the frame). I need a 53 to 54cm top tube and 57 seat tube... Think I will finally just put money into something that fits.

    Ah yes, short arms, long legs. I feel your pain. I'm 5'9" and able to ride 63cm road frames but a 56cm top tube is about all I can handle. Pretty sure my latest build 56(seat)x55(top) will be a good fit though.

    Have you considered the tall version of the Nitto technomic stem? They give about an extra 2.5" of height. Or an ATB quill stem?

    Well lucky you can handle a 56cm tt. On my 56 I had 70mm stem, still 3 cm to far away from the back of the hoods. According to a bike fit I did. and I think their fit was poor and I need to come 4-5 cm's back.

    All the builder will be able to do will be to give you Joop Zoetmelk, Barry Hoban, Bernard Thevenet geometry, which will enweird switching to your racing machine. If the cranks are 172's they are the stiffest of the era, per Bicycling magazine consumer laboratory testing. The guy who says it may be Cromor has a point, but if it's SL you will end up using it to race because it handles so well, I can pretty much guarantee. This brand is underrated.

    I am looking at a builder build me a knew frame.

    The basso indeed handled well. Surprisingly much like my 5.2 madone oclv.

    To bad the Basso didn't fit you.

    I think it was a very fair asking price if it was a Gap which it looked to be. It looked like it was in very nice condition to. I looked for one for a long time on e-bay and they pretty much ran from $600 all the way up to a ridiculous $3250. Yeah, that was ridiculous, but they seemed to average around $900 or so. Even frame-sets ran around $400 and up.

    I finally got lucky and found mine for $400. For some reason, the bidding statred out at $49, and only two other guys joined in the bidding and they didn't seem overly enthusiastic and I got it for that price. But I think I was lucky really.

    It's a fantastic bike and I'm really happy with her. Very comfortable and as you said, it's a nice handling bike to.

    Lots of vintage production bikes (even top-level models) had real short TTs on the large sizes. Sometimes they had only two TTs for the entire range, because it made fixturing easier.

    63/56 would be pretty easy to find with a bit of an eBay search, imo....

    I've seen 66/57 frames on eBarf.....
