Vintage Racing bike weights?
Does anyone know what these vintage race bike typically weigh? I know that compents and wheels can change bike weight drastically.
But what were typical frame+fork weights on the mid to higher end steel race bikes?

Setup close to original with sewups/tobular wheels tires about 21-22lbs for a racer, upgraded with mostly modern components 18-19lbs.For nicer touring street bike with original 27 steel wheels and some extras about 27-29, upgraded modernized somewhat 22-24lbs.

Here are some old Fuji Design Series catalog specs, including separate weights for the frame and fork. For my size, 58cm, that comes up to 6 pounds for the pair. I'm not sure if that is very accurate, since I've never weighed mine, but it is certainly light and I like it.

21-22 pounds for a fully built up bike sounds about right, if it is high end. A hi-ten framed bike would be a bit under 30, I believe.

It depends what material the frame is made of.
For bikes made in the 80's:
Steel racing frames, 21-23 pounds was typical for a good quality race bikecoming from the upper mid level model line a manufacturer might offer.
Aluminum racing frames which would be top of the line at that time, it goes down to around 19 - 21 pounds
For CF bikes of the same era which would be some of the most expensive frames sold then, around 17 - 19 pounds.
To achieve these weights, the component groups and wheelsets used on them would be at or close to top of the line stuff.
Much lesser weights were achieved for each type of frames, but thery were mostly one-off weight weenie projects that were not practical for most cyclists as reliability with the more fragile components was much lessened.

I started weighing my bicycles a few years ago and entered the information in Bicycles and Weight. A high end racing bicycle is usually between 20lb and 22lb. Have a look at this chart and judge for yourself. I must add that I have a lot more information to add to the page. Very few vintage racing bicycles came in under the 20lb mark...

Data point: My 62cm 1987 Paramount frame using a mix of Columbus SL and SP weighs 5.1 pounds, and the fork weighs 1.8 pounds (no headset, no BB or cups). Total for frame and fork, 6.9 pounds.

My race bikes in the 70's were above or below 21 lbs. Middle sized bikes, I used light pedals on some, but as I raced more, the bikes got a bit heavier, it was insurance to finish the race.

My 72 56mm Crescent Pepita 531DB frame/fork with Campy NR BB and headset weighed 7.82lbs before it was built up. In contrast, my 72 54mm Lejeune TDF "Alliage" (seamed and middle of the road at best) frame/fork with stock cottered BB and headset weighed 8.25lbs before it was built up. With a Stronglight Competition BB it went down to 8lbs even.

Mid to high end tubesets can vary in wieght by more than 1 lb. For a given tubeset, frame and fork weights vary by more than other pound, depending on size, number of fittings, cut-outs, type of lugs, dropouts and bottom bracket shell. It not just the variation in components that drasticlly affect the weight.
