Centurion Lemans rs What should I pay for this?
 

Ok so went to a pawn shop and saw this. # N7A7749 So what I get its a 87 bio crank light action shifters etc 12spd. They wanted $199 right off LOL. Now I know I am not a real bike nut but then they said they would take $150. From what I can tell it needs tires,new cables and rims. It also got electric tape on the handle bar. I was thinking like $65-75 for it. I am looking to make a rain bike for spring and fall since the PNW has those iffy rain days. :)

$150 is a little high. Consider what you'll need to put into it. Tires, cables, and rims alone would add $75 to $100 dollars. If you don't like bio-pace, then your looking at additional expenses. That's a lot to spend on a rain bike.

I had no issue paying $225 for my Ironman which was not perfect either, and an '87 Lemans RS sounds like it should be pretty close to the Ironman in quality. I'd take a closer look at the rims, if you think you can straighten them out, $150 sounds decent. If not, then I'd probably pass unless you really like it.

Light action components = good stuff but low end. $150 would be a good price if the bike was tuned up, ready to ride. IME pawn shops have no idea how to price bikes. Given the work it needs, $75 is a fair price. I would definitely not go over $125.

if it's going to need rims... you're essentially paying for a frame set with a mishmash of components.
are you sure it'll be needing new rims? what's wrong with it?

Well I went back yesterday. Talked to the guy and I said it had been there for a while. He tells me 7 months and told him I drive home from work and see it still in the window. I also told them ready to deal and he says the owner is not in till today. Yea as for price I was thinking $65-$75. The rims looked trashed and the crank has a tiny up and down play like maybe 1/16 . It has some rust spots on it size of a quarter or dime few spots. I had a 89 Centurion Had to sell it to fund the upgrade. The Bio pace I don't mind but I know they did not pay jack for the bike they will be lucky to get their loan money out of it. I want to put some long board sks fenders on it with rack and bag for the rain. Yeah the less I can get it for the better. This bike had electric tape on white handle bars, like they got it from a good will shop or something. I am still ok to walk away I am just want to start riding again and make it a longer season.

So let me know what you guys think again as I will be heading to the pawn shop after work with cash :)

This bike sounds worse every time I read your posts. Broken (?) wheels, wobbly crankset, rust.. Based on that and without being able to see it I'd lower my number to about $50.

maybe I am being over critical but I don't think these guys know a lick about bikes. I know enough to get myself into trouble. :)

pawn shops know nothing about bikes which if you do know bikes is to your advantage... but they can be a pain to deal with as they try and squeeze the highest dollar they can get for dirty, non functioning bikes.

If they are asking $199... that means they paid someone... 50 to 70 dollars for the bike assuming most pawn shop operate on a 65% margin. I often take stuff in to sell when there is a bike I want... get rid of my junk and trade it for theirs

+1 Sounds worse every time, I would keep looking. Its not like an Accordo is high end or rare (I've owned a couple of them).

So $75 to 80 would be golden. If I put tubes and tires on it I could ride it. It def needs some tlc right off the bat. I live in the pnw and Portland the bike mecca. Stuff like this does not last more than 2 sec on cl :) ok maybe 10 min LOL

In my experience their lack of knowledge is just a pain. Most of the bikes are way overpriced and when I offer them 1/2 of what they're asking they just assume I'm trying to screw them.

Yeah I stopped by my lbs and talked to the guy I get most of my stuff from. One man show etc, he said to wait for a newer one. Even at $75 I would still have to dump some money into it. The movement in the crank kinda put me off too. Oh well Thanks for all the advice. He is keeping his eye out for one. That is were I got my last one that was totally overhauled for $125 from one of his customers. :) That was my 89 cen that I had to sell.

Went back to the pawn shop. I just wanted to see if they would take $75. They dropped down to $125 and they act like it was gold. Said it was vintage. I told them its only worth the frame everything else is shot. Told them just wanted it for a junk rain bike. Oh well maybe I will try again in a few months apparently this guy holds on to stuff till the cows come home. LOL
