    1987 Schwinn Prologue Frameset

    I am just curious as to how much the frame would go for. It fits well, but I have never been fond of red.

    I would love to simply sell or trade it so I could get ahold of a similar frame with a more desirable color.

    I thought about painting it, but I don't want to deface something that someone else would love.

    The TT measured out to be 54-55cm

    I've got one of those myself, though I plan on keeping mine and riding it again this year.


    I think my only issue with the paint job is that the fade from red to white is not a fine, subtle feathering.

    I paid $150 for mine in '99 (complete bike, though I've upgraded some components). Someone in another thread suggested they felt that was slightly overpriced nowadays, but I think it depends on if you are selling the frame or the entire bike and what parts it has on it. Looks like yours might have Dura-ace on it.

    If the frame doesn't end up being worth much, I will probably just have it painted. I really enjoy the lines and lug work, so I may consider throwing some over the top 80's colors on it. I picked the bike up for $100 and it came with full 7402-7400 dura-ace. I plan on keeping the groupset if I ever get rid of the frame.

    For the frameset, somewhere between $150 to $250, depending on condition (looks pretty pristine to me). Myself, I love the paint job (I should, I have two of them right now). Second in line to the Paramount in 1987, built by Panasonic (National), Tange Prestige frameset. Should be worth more, but the market hasn't caught on yet.

    It is definitely a quality frame. It is surprisingly light to for what it is. I am going to do some looking around, but it is looking like I will end up painting it, unless the color ends up growing on me. ha

    Just one last comment. First, Panasonic made a variety of bikes for Schwinn, I have ones from the 1970s, the 1980s, and the 1990s. I think the Prologue was the top of the Panasonic built Schwinns, weighing all factors: fit and finish, decal/badging, tubing, and so on. They also made a black and gray one, maybe you can find someone to trade with you. This is definitely one bike I would not paint.

    This would KILL the value from $150-250 down to less than half that if you can get someone to believe it's a Prologue. The original paint is in amazing condition, please don't paint this.

    Had one, used it for training and crit racing back in the day. Mine started to get some rust around the cable guides, so I had it painted. Reused the Tange Prestige decal, got some other Schwinn downtube decals from painter. I bought it new as a frameset, built up with Dura Ace and Ultegra components, wanted the gray/black fade, but only one in stock was red at the time. Still have the frame, got a little ding in top tube from a mishap during a crit once, still has the tire mark from someones wheel crashing into frame/me. Cool bike you've got there, nice price also, I wouldn't paint it if its in good condition.
