Masi Gran Criterium : Should I buy it?
There's a very nice 1983 Masi Gran Criterium being sold buy the original owner on craigslist (well, it was his dads.) I took a look at it and it certainly looks like it's in good condition. The frame has a few scratches on the down tube, a spec of rust on the top of the seat tube, and maybe 3 other places where the paint is missing. The components are all original super record and in great shape, except the wheelset which are nos high flange record hubs w/ tubular campy rims. Original turbo saddle is included but not pictured.
One of the frames build by Rob Roberson according to the BB. MC 54 C 80 55
I know very little about Masi which is why it's hard for me to value this one but it fits me great so..
Do you guys think it's worth $1000?

Yes I think it is worth $1000. Super Record group itself about $600. Wheelset a couple hundred. Frame at least a few hundred.

If it fits, Yes.
Remove the splash tape and it will be worth more.

Tell the seller he needs to take off at least 20 bucks from the price because of the hideous bar tape he put on the poor bike!
Some white padded bar tape and skiwall tubs and the reinstallation of the original Turbo saddle (Hopefully white and in good condition too) and that bike will be perfect!

No one likes the splash tape haha? I don't mind it and it's newly wrapped!!
I was thinking around 800 to maybe 900 range myself. I might talk to the seller and see if he will budge.
Chombi, I think the the original turbo was black but I havent seen it, it could be quite used.

Do you not like the pattern or color... Having recently returned to biking after a 20 year hiatus, I thought the splash tape looks pretty cool in general. On this particular bike, perhaps a black/grey/white splash tape would be a better match...

just say no to the splash...white saddle/white tape or black saddle/black tape for that bike...

I should say that any of my valuations would be an Ebay selling price. I have no local market to speak of but I troll Ebay really heavily and I haven't seen a GC in good condition go for less than $1000 in a while. There was one last week that went for 760 but it had a bad mix of not too great parts and a non-Masi fork. If this bike is in good condition, and it looks it but the pictures aren't good enough to tell, then it would definitely sell for $1000+ on Ebay. So if you can get it for less than $1000 I would say you got a good deal.

Looks nice and if it fits you great, $1K is a fair price. You could probably sell the seat for $75-100 if you don't like it.

Thanks for the help, looks like I will be picking it up this week. I am definitely keeping the components but I may sell the frameset/wheelset in the future if I decide to move the parts to another frame. I'm excited!

One more question: what exactly was Masi's lineup of models back then? I know there is the gran criterium, 3v volumetrica, & nuovo strada. Which one is the best for riding and/or collectability?

This bike may have been repainted. In 1980 the down tube graphics I am pretty sure still had the Masi and Gran Criterium in alternating colors, yellow and white, this one may be all yellow and the Masi top tube signature was still placed on the non drive side, from the one image the down tube typography is all yellow. From the appearance, good chance if it was repainted it was by Jim Allen, just looks it.
A few years later there were a few other models, the 3V Volumetrica was the new Italian model beyond the Prestige. These were not available in the USA market for a while. The Prestige was never actively imported to the USA. Masi USA eventually imported 3V's for a time and later built them here, also the USA branch created the Nuova Strada and Gran Corsa as subordinate models for the American market below the Gran Criterium.

Thanks for the info repechage! I will try and do more research on it to see what it should have looked like originally; though I think it's an 83 not an 80, but I might be wrong according to Bhoveys masi database. Anyways, I bought it!!! and should be making a thread about it soon.
Edit* Ahh youre right c8055 = built in 3rd quarter / 1980 / #55 yes?

My wife has a pristine '84 Gran Criterium built by Starck and painted by Jim Allen in San Marcos.

Very nice Masi you have there. 1000k is a very good price in my opinion.

Looks just like my '80 Roberson. Well, the fork bend is a bit different, and your paint is in better condition, and mine is a 60. The Breaking Away orange makes it worth $1000 easily.
