Columbia Tandem

Hello everyone,

I was hoping for some help identifying this columbia tandem. I picked the bike up for $65 and was trying to find a serial number on the bike but I have not had luck. The bike has been outfitted with various parts as well as some schwinn parts such as rims, tires, and lights.

Any information or help would be greatly appreciated.

John

I've had a few Columbias with numbers starting with zeros, which doesn't fit neatly in with the numbers listed on sites that give reference to Columbia serial numbers. This style of frame discontinued by Columbia at some point in the 1960s, that and the N on the serial probably indicate that it is a 1963 model.

The style of frame you typically see on Columbia tandems is this one:

Notice the lack of a top tube on the front of the frame. This style was phased in at some point in the 1960s although I'm not sure exactly when, and I think that Columbia may have even produced both styles of frames simultaneously for a short while. They continued with this style until the mid 1970s.

Thanks for the information. I see why I had trouble locating any information on it. I have been trying to decide what I'd like to do with this bike. For sure I am going to try and find some different handlebars for it as a summer project.
