What have I got here?

If I read the page bout the serial numbers right,
And if I found the right model in the catalog,
Then I have a 1983 Fuji S-12

The serial number is FC007633

I just got it, and it is my first bike in many years, so I am not aiming to price it for selling.
But I would like to know I am not damaging bicycle history if I decide to make it into a bright green and yellow single speed or otherwise modify it.

That frame looks pretty clean. Unless you have a lot of painting experience I wouldn't change it. You only have the quality of a factory paint job once.

+1.
As Social Suicide points out, you can do anything you want to "YOUR bike" but IMHO, it may be unwise.

Will you be ruining a collectible piece of bike history? No. Those Fujis were solid, well made, but definitely entry-to-mid level; the first "real" bike a person bought after graduating from their Schwinn Sting Ray. But that paint job looks pretty nice... (and I don't understand why people give up the convenience of 10 speeds, either, but that's just me)

The convenience of 10 speeds is great, if I could get at them without losing my balance and besmirching the pavement with my blood. However a set of thumb shifters should not be too hard to manage, if I went that route.

Thank you, frperdurabo, for the answer I was looking for. As to the paint, it was an example, and I have little intention of changing that for now. My first mods will be in the handlebars and shifters. Dove wing or ape hangers and either thumb shifters or single speed.

Thanks for the help, guys!

I hate when people spray over original paint, and your paint looks pretty nice. But on a lower end bike like this that'll never be super valuable, you might as well do what you want with it. Just realize that unless you get it professionally done it'll scratch off the first time you touch it.
