Rode my old steel Davidson today
It is still a sweet ride. It has original Campy NR downtube shifters and derailleurs, but modern 10 speed Velomax/Easton wheels. The crank is a Chorus 10 speed as I had a spare one, and the original Zeus was noisy with the 10 speed chain, although I kept the original loose bearing square taper bottom bracket as I couldn't get the fixed cup off. The brakes are modern Tektro Quartz, nice brakes for the price. Chain is new of course, seatpost is a Kuota from the frame I crashed (as is the crank), cables are still the original and are working just fine. Bars and quill stem are original. (I guess 10 speed is already getting old, and 11 speed is standard now.)
With this equipment in place it rides dead silent compared to my Chorus equipped Kuota carbon bike. It shifts silently too, and it always just goes into the gear even though I'm using downtube friction shifters. It isn't like the old days where each shift gave a clunk. That said, more than once I pushed my brake lever sideways to shift, to no avail.
I was expecting it to not be as quiet as my teenage son had been using it for about a year. He doesn't take good care of things.
