Tendem values? A Motobecane in this instance

Generally, how does one figure out a value on a tandem? First off they cost more when new (usually), but secondly they have a very limited market (if you don't count my local area's C.O.W.S. Couples on Wheels tandem club) . This one is already beyond my budget, guy said he has had an offer of $175 so far. So, either with this one specifically, or any tandem in general, how does one set a value on a tandem?

I bought one this summer for considerably more than 175, but less than $300, and I still consider it a steal.

You've answered your question. It's determined by the local market conditions. Most markets are poor for tandems and they're difficult and costly to ship, which drives the price down, unless there's a local tandem club.

Thanks, I did refer the seller to the local club once I knew it was beyond my budget.

Yes indeed, you bought well. If you decide later to let it go, be sure to let the group know. These are really decent bikes (for their time and at the price point). I owned 2 over the years and they performed well.

I missed a great deal a Burley last June, it even had a yakima holder for it. It was a '95ish and only about $450. I really should have bought it but I have no room for it nor a Stoker.

You need to up your budget if you are serious and want a decent tandem. If there was a ridable, decent road tandem in my size locally for under $200 I would buy it in a heartbeat even though I already have one and don't need another, just because it's so cheap.

As a general rule, they cost more than a comparable quality single road bike, maybe almost double on average? I watched the market for a few months before buying my Bill Boston and that was what I noticed.

Good luck with your search.

+1

Tandems go for quite a bit, at least double a comparable road bike. Walk into a bike shop and they might have one on the floor and it'll be expensive, no doubt about it. It's a limited market but they cost so much new and are rare enough they can command high prices. Get a couple hundred bucks together and steal that Motobecane.

The only tandems that go cheaper are the crap department store ones from the 70s, or possibly the old Schwinn cruiser style ones. I would not want to ride either.
