Trek 5000 OCLV 97'
Hi everyone,
I'm looking into buying my first bike. I plan to use it for training and eventually some triathlons. I plan to use it for a while seeing as I'm in college and won't be able to afford a new bike for a while. Because of all this I decided that it would be best to get a used, racing geometry bike. I've been looking and stumbled across this on Craiglist. Do you think its worth it? I'm hoping to bring it down to $400

And this is the bike new from 97'

I don't know how many miles it or the components have. I contacted the seller and she said it has been in no crashes. I'm going to check it out on Saturday but I would like some advice on what to look for.

I think it is well worth the $400 , and actually , the asking price is an ok deal, IMO. A friend of mine sold one very similar to that one , about 6 months ago for $700 . Those wheels are bulletproof , I'm running some on one of my bikes. I'm no carbon fiber expert, but I would look the frame over real good for cracks, deep gouges , etc. Others that know more about that bike in particular will chime in soon . Good luck!
Oh, check a bike sizing chart as a guide to see if that bike is an ok size for you.

Ditto on carefully checking for cracks and flaws.
I rode a a 5200 for a few years and it was a good bike. On the other hand a friend of mine had to send 2 of them back due to frame defects. Recently someone on the local CL was trying to sell a 5000 series frame with a cracked chainstay for $40 as "wall art." And there's always a steady stream of local riders whose carbon bikes of various brands develop cracks or other defects, but those folks are riding 5,000--10,0000 miles a year.

I wouldn't touch it- the shifters have been changed from OEM. This bike didn't come with sora shifters back when, and I'm not sure why it has them now. I know that doesn't necessarily mean much, but it does imply this bike has either been ridden a lot or has been through some kind of incident where the old shifters were broken.
If it were me, I'd couple the knowledge of use history with the catastrophic failure potential () of carbon and keep looking.

Components are questionable. Shifters are obviously not stock. No driveside pictures - who knows what other junk has been put on this bike in place of the nicer original parts. If it had the original parts I'd say $450 would be a deal. Without them, depends what has been replaced and what is still there.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I'm still going to go check out the bike and see if I can learn what parts are added on and inspect for any cracks. I'll keep you updated. If this bike doesn't work out do you have any advice for what kind of bike I should get? I want a bike that will last a while and that can be used in races.

There are no real quality 8sp Shimano shifters anymore, so Sora shifters are it. Seller could have gone with MS or Campy, sure, but not to just flip a bike or get rid of an aged steed. If the choice is crappy new shifters or older 8sp shifters notorious for breaking over time, the new crappy ones probably at least work...
If you see a crack that looks regular, all the way around the tube, within inches of any tube intersection or termination, it could very well just be a paint issue at the joint... or it could be the carbon coming unjoined. You take some risks with used, vintage carbon...

The older higher end 8 speed STI are all rebuildable (not like the new stuff) and pretty durable too. I have been slowly migrating my fleet to the 600 tricolor and DA 8 speed STI.
