raleigh professional 1982 pearl white

hello

great site, like any newcomer this is one of the first places i thought of coming

ive had a raleigh record 1985 sprint which i love to bits but im well aware that in proper circles its just an expensive toy/looks bike but i love it anyway

however, ive just bought a white 1982 pearl white raleigh professional which is something else and rides like the wind to coin a phrase.Ive tried google but cant find one similar so reckon its a put together-i'd love to know more about it and how i could improve it even more with period parts, and of course id love to know what people think its worth

i bought it off www.steel-vintage.com its in the sold section which has its spec etc but will be happy to post pics up here if anyone is interested in helping out

thanks
Joe

Apparently, BBC has opened a UK branch.

BBC is a bike shop in Wisconsin that sells vintage bikes at what most consider exceedingly high prices. Looking at the prices on the site you posted, one might guess that Raleigh was sold for a bit more than what many would consider fair market value. But it's a nice bike and I've heard they ride very well, so regardless of perceived value ride and enjoy!

I suspect this post is intended to advertise the site in question. Reported.

jon c-ha ha no problem, thanks mate i must admit i knew i was probs paying ott but i loved the look, couldnt resist and it rides really really well-how could i improve it? i need pedals and seat post/seat for starters-is it worth putting all campag super record ie. replacing the campag gs and nuovo record parts?
btw i paid £450 which included postage from germany which im sure youd all choke on but i couldnt couldnt resist, riding it for a couple of weeks ive soon forgotton about the money (which the mrs definately hasnt) hope im not accused too much of driving the prices up too much as it was listed way above that before i made an

Post some pictures and we can provide advice on improving your bike. Without seeing photos, $450 for a Professional doesn't seem too far out of the ballpark.

Nice bike. You might have overpaid a little bit, but it's a sunk cost. Many happy miles to you.

Yes, it's probably worth putting some more Campy on it...but not sure I would replace NR with SR. You planning to ride it or hang it on a wall?

Sorry you didn't get many serious responses. People are being a$$holes for no reason to a new member? Did I miss something?

There are LOTS of pictures of his bike at that website he posted. https://www.steel-vintage.com/index.p...-record-detail

I would agree... I don't think $450 is a bad price for that. Strange component group though, and I don't find a Professional in any catalog I can find for 1982 (UK). Doesn't mean there wasn't one, was just going to see if it listed stock components, or whether these were sold as frame only.

New member, posts a link to a website (didn't link the actual bike), vague poorly written post... It's not like no one ever spams BF. I was skeptical at first.

Its 450 pounds folks, not $450. 450 pounds ~ $725, still not BBC for sure, but a trip through their site shows some wild prices.

Prices below do not include shipping:

Ex: XL Basso frameset only, repainted, missing some key decals (no head decal for example): $500.

Used DA7400 RD: $120.

When I looked at the site, I didn't see a price, so was repeating what I read here. Given the equipment level (and no Brooks Team Pro), 450 pounds is on the high side. Had it been equipped with full NR/SR, then that price wouldn't be too bad.

It's a nice bike! If it fits, it rides! The price is in the mind of the beholder, so don't worry and enjoy! Oh, and welcome to the Bikeforum!

point taken but how can i improve it-ive got a four month budget of £100 a month plus back on parts-if it was yours would you replace the brakes with SR,front der with SR/NR and a SR cranks? also will SR cranks fit onto existing bottom bracket? in other words what are the weakest parts of the bike as it is? also SR pedals? altho not totally clueless,is the advantage of SR over NR just weight really? also are the wheels/rims any good really,id really appreciate some expert guidance as im really happy with it but would like it to be as good as possible

I wouldn't change a thing until yuou need to. It's complete, and any "upgrades" you do will make little, if any, noticeable difference in the ride. Spend money for a great set of tires.
From a visual presentation, the only thing that really stood out for me - well 2 things - the brake hoods don't appear right, and the front derailleur looks like a 980, and just doesn't match the rest of the group. But replace those when you run across a bargain.
