Colnago Dream
Hello,
I'm new to the forum and I had a question about a Colnago i see advertized on craigslist here in San Antonio, TX. i currently have a mountain bike and would love a Colnago road bike. It's my size and in my price range, but I'd like to know if it's worth the $1050 price. I asked what year it is, but the owner only guessed 10 years old. Based on what I know, that's probably close. It does not have the bstay and has Dura Ace 9 speed. the biggest thing i"m concerned about is it has been repainted. That doesn't bother me that badly, but I'd like to know how it accefts the price. heres' the specifics and a link to the ad so you can see pics. Thanks for your help guys.
"Up for sale a COLNAGO DREAM, and it will be a dream once you get on it and ride it. 52 cm frame size should fit someone 5'4-5'6 or so. Shimano Dura Ace components, 9 speed, shifters , brakes, cranks, and derailleurs. Wheels are an mavic CXP front on an Ultegra hub, and a Mavic Cosmos on the rear. Bike weighs in at a light 18 pounds with no pedals, not bad for aluminium. Put some pedals on and you are ready for the Mission to Mission ride, or one of several other upcoming rides. No one else will be on a bike like this one."

Terrible C/L ad, wheels don't match, dirty = my interest would be waning. Add repaint, no thanks. You never know what if any damage is underneath the paint: repairs or whatever.
Anytime I see mismatched wheels, I want to know what happened to the original wheels, particularly the front. Front wheels get gone for just a few reasons: 1. Lost it. 2. Got stolen. and 3. Bike was crashed. Got crashed is 90%+ the reason in my experience.
Someone owning a Colnago is (usually) going to have a really nice set of matching wheels. As a minimum, this is someone who picked up the frameset, and just used the closest pair of wheels he had to a match. That's fine for a $200 bike, I would expect a lot more at this pricepoint. Matching = rims match, hubs match, QR skewers match, spokes match. Oh yeah, and tires should match too.
If you decide to look at it, make sure those DA STI work flawlessly. I have several that died on me, yes, they can be revived for a while, but they are not repairable, and replacements are $$$.
Around here, high $$ bikes on C/L do not move, or move really slowly. This gives buyers a huge edge. I regularly buy higher end bikes off C/L, as that's where the deals are (anything in the $50 to $150 range goes fast, even crap. Get the price up to $500, and they stay for a while).
I bought my Colnago off C/L, in the month of January. Guy had it posted for 2 weeks. I really was not interested in getting one, but it was a beautiful bike. Turned out I was the only person that responded to his ad. Price became compelling, so I bought it. It was a Master Lite, with one of those very attractive Art Deco paint jobs, and everything matched.

Thanks for the feedback. I really appreciate it. If the DA sti's are good, what should I offer? I'll really inspect the frame & ask about the wheels too. Thanks again

Too much for what it is. I would offer $500 and see what happens. Repaint would make me avoid it like the plague, especially with an aluminum frame.

Repaint, mismatch wheels, stem looks cheesy... I don't think I'd even pay $500, but I generally hate repaints even more than others. $1000 is just way way too much.

I would just keep looking. This bike has too many negatives:
Mismatched parts
Repaint
Goofy build
Sky high price
Even if I could get the price down to something reasonable, it really has none of the features I would desire in a Colnago. Many Colnagos had unique and beautiful paint jobs. That is totally gone. Collectibility on a repaint is minimal. At this point to me, no more desirable (probably less) than a nice Cannondale.

,I also think you can do much better.
I've seen nice, original Colnago Dreams go for about 800 or abit less. Aluminum is not that desirable, although I like them, so keep looking...

This was just about the time Colnago had a massive problem with the headtubes cracking from not being milled improperly for the integrated headsets. I wonder if that could be the reason for the repaint?

Also up on ebay too. That is where I saw it, the fork is later. It does look kind of good for a simple respray. I guess I like painted forks instead of chrome. That one is too rich too, but at least one could go and inspect it.

Checking through CL once a week, I stumble upon some gems.
This Colnago Dream cyclocross bike, with a complete Campy build, would suit me better than the one described here.
The asking price is about the same as the one you posted.
In fact, this would be a great set up for me here in Minnesota.
Just add a set of Nokians and I'd be ready to let the impending snow storm have it.

I would seriously take a look at this Dream if it is still available and it fits.
The seller sounds motivated! If you have it shipped make sure a forum member checks the frame closely before you cut the deal.
FYI If this bike were larger I would have already bought it.
I need a cyclocross bicycle for next summer and this one looks like she is right up my alley.
These older cyclocross bikes can make fantastic all around bikes from my experience.
