Holy Cow!

I know it is a bit OT but I thought some of us would get a kick out of the iconic classic. Batteries to Power!

It's the BATMOBILE!!! If I had the cash, sure...and I bet you could make money with that car. Rent it to various commercial interests, charge $500 to drive it for an hour...etc.

If you could get $500 an hour (which you could I suspect for commercials, but the market for individuals who'd pay that would be slim), it would take 84,000 hours to earn your nut. That's excluding insurance, administrative costs, etc. I'm not seeing it as viable investment from that perspective.

What amazes me is taht the price essentially means someone else would have paid $4.1 mil. (more or less).

I'm not saying it's an investment, I'm saying you could get some money back while owning the BATMOBILE...and for commercials I think you could get substantially more than that. I do think there are a lot of private citizens who would pay for a ride in the BATMOBILE.

Rent it for weddings, barmitzvahs, car shows...rich people will pay for unique stuff.

If you have the money why not, however, for about 150K you can have one build to your specks with anything you want....

There are quite a few replica Batmobiles out there, being used as the OP described. This is the original. Some of the other rare cars at B-J auction this weekend brought over 10 million! For a car, for crissakes!

The Barret-Jackson auction in Scottsdale is the yearly event where people who have money to burn go to impress each other by how much money they can throw around. I'm not even close to running around in those circles. My entire net worth is much less than five percent of what this car sold for.

I have an extensive movie car wish list, none of which I could afford at this point... But maybe someday. Some favorites:

- 1977/78 Trans Am from Smokey and the Bandit
- 1973 Ford Mustang Mach 1 from the original Gone in 60 Seconds (not that awful remake.)
- Delorean
- Cadillac Cien from The Island
- Beater 2nd gen Camaro from Transformers

How about the Mustang from Bullit?
Any Bond car, especially the Aston Martins.
The Shelby from Gumball Rally?

And of course...the Herbie the Lovebug VW.

Much as I enjoy Mr. Barriss' work, I would prefer to own this:

My favourite TV/movie car is Sarah Jane's Nissan Figaro. Apparently they were a 1991, Japanese market only model. Only 20,000 were built. They are a lovely little retro design, before retro automobiles became popular in North America. Some did make their way into Canada and they're not priced beyond reach, with $15k being typical.

$4.2M?

I dunno.

A custom car shop a few miles from my house has a fiberglass replica of the batmobile on a rolling chassis just sitting in their back lot. I bet about $10-15,000 investment would finish it off into an indistinguishable copy of the original.

In fact, you can buy kits from GothamCruisers.com.

Personally, I'd rather have the BatCycle...

It's such a cool iconic car from Hollywood, but what always bothered me was they called it the "Batmobile"......a "high tech" car even back then should not have the "...mobile" in its name as Grandma's "Oldsmobile" did.....Just why don't people just call it the "Batcar" instead??! I sure hope the new owner does after paying that much for it....
