Gios Torino frame, what am I dealing with here?

Hi guys,

Managed to pick up this bike that appears to have some contradictory features. Hoping some of you know exactly what I got my hands on here. My biggest concern is the stuff on the upper tube. It says both 'Super Record GIOS' as 'GIOS Professional"... The color red definitely seems uncommon on a GIOS, but as far as I know it's not impossibe. The parts on it seem to be a mixture of brands and generation, but since I will most probably remove them I'm not too interested in them. Anybody care to share some insight ?

Thanks!

Paul

Welcome to the forums.

From the bright and almost unblemished paint paired with the seasoned fork, atypical color and graphics, I think you have a repainted bike.

Many of these bikes were sold to shops as frame sets, so the mixed ensemble of parts is not a big surprise. Sugino cranks were the thin wallet alternative to Campagnolo by many a racer, other parts, who knows.
Maybe a prior owner just did not like Campagnolo.

Thanks for the quick reply. Yeah, that makes sense. Question remains then which frame it originally is, a Super Record or Professional (or even something else).

Nice BB cutouts and Aelle tubing decal don't seem to go together as Aelle is usually used on lower tier models which will usually have plainer looking BB shells. Makes it possible that the tubing might be better than Aelle....but who knows....

Well. it's obviously a DYI repaint and a composite decal job! There's no way that GIOS or a respectable professional painter would have painted over the dropout screws! Consider yourself lucky that the headset and BB cups aren't painted. However, it does have the all the prerequisite cutouts and embossings, so it does appear to be legitimate. Based of the features it should be a Super Record. I've never seen a Gios with Aelle, but it certainly wouldn't hurt to check that it uses a 27.2mmpost and has the helical ridges inside the bottom of the fork's steerer tube (though, depending on the era, it may have a wooden plug obscuring the ridges).

I was thinking the same thing about the Alle, the decal is too clean, like all of them, but the drilled dropouts is what tipped me.

The seatpost says diameter 270 and it has the wooden plug inside the bottom of the fork's steerer tube that T-Mar mentioned.

There is no way it is alelle. Someone didn't know what they were doing. If it were mine and my size I would restore it to GIOS blue glory with 1st gen super record.

Exactly my thoughts, size is perfect. I've been doing some more googling, and came across this bike on a Dutch community about Italian bikes:

https://www.italiaanseracefietsen.com...ano-juli-2011/

It looks very similar. Same fork plus the same bottom "cutouts" or whatever they are called. The guy who owns the forementioned frame actually went to GIOS in Torino to have it repainted and that's where he was told this was in fact a 1973 frame, and thus a Record frame (Super Record was introduced later that year). Guess I'll just strip the frame and send in some pics to GIOS to be totally sure what it is. I actually am a Dutchman living in Italy (Tuscany) so I guess I just have to go for it. I don't wanna be the guy on the fake red Gios later this year at Eroica . Thanks for the help btw guys!

I have a red Super Record All first gen. dated 1976. Mario says they never made red. People who sold them BITD say they cane in blue, white, red and black. I have seen about half dozen red ones that looked real. I have been told only the Record and Super Record came with the Gios BB cutout. Ed
