There is a Shogun brand road bike for sale at my LBS. Not sure of the model or year. It's used, in very good condition.

Their asking price is $475. Are there any Shogun models that are worth that much, or would it be prudent, if I decide I want to buy it, to negotiate?

I don't know ANYTHING about this bike, but I like it...$475 seems a tad steep though, but like I said, I don't know enough to know how much it's worth. Help is appreciated.

Someone with more shogun knowledge will come along and be of real help, but I can tell you at that price for what I can see I'd pass. Frame material and knowing what groupset are on it would help a lot at that price though.

The bike looks nice, but not $475 nice. It looks kinda lower end to me, schrader valves, 27" wheels, etc. The bike was probably $250-$300 when it was new, if it fits you and you like it, and if the shop selling it offers some sort of warranty, $200 seems fair. Good luck

If you asked the shop why it's a little pricey, you'll probably get an answer like this: "This is such a sweet steel road bike, and we just completely overhauled it and put on all new parts, tires, etc. It's well worth the investment for not only today but the future." I'm not in even at half the asking price.

Thanks for the information...I want a nice steel road bike, but I don't want to pay too much for it....sadly I'm pretty sure the shop wouldn't accept an offer of $200 in a million years. :\

The subject Shogun should be a 1984 Shogun 600 as it has 27" wheels and appears to have 1st generation Shimano 105 dront derailleur and crankset with Z-series brakes. If so, frame is a double butted CrMo main triangle with unspec'd stays and forks. While it is very clean and a full LBS overhaul is certainly worth a premium, that price is still far too high.

I really would like to buy the Shogun if I could get it for a good price, but I just don't think it's going to happen, so I probably won't bother asking. I really wish road bikes in shops weren't so expensive. I know they have overhead and everything, but still.

Thanks everyone for the advice--I'm glad I went with my gut and asked the knowledgeable people here before spending too much.

Even though I love classic/vintage bikes, I can see myself on a more modern bike like the R600 (never ridden one, but they look pretty nice). I'd really Fred it up with a threadless stem riser and a comfy seat.

$475 for a 80's Japanese Road bike with 27 wheels is just way too high even one this nice. T-Mar is dead on with the ID. As for price I wouldn't go over $250 even with a nice proffessionail shop rebuild. Which this bike does not appear to have it looks like the shop got a really nice trade in and through some new tires on it and gave it a basic ounce over. Actually if you looking for a fair or even good deal based on this add I would avoid this shop. Plus for so called proffesional shop the bad wrong side pic just seems bad.

in my impression shogun bikes are solid but not exceptional bikes. more like 175$, 200$ since it's in good condition.

That has to be the stupidest bike shop ad I've ever seen. Absolutely no information about the bike, one non-driveside picture. $475 is a silly high price. I would probably avoid that shop, if those are the ads they are putting out...

$475 is high -- but then again it looks totally overhauled, which will save you hours of work (if you even have the tools to start with). It will also save you the cost of tires, tubes, bar tape, cables, housings, brake pads, a chain, etc. Not to mention bearings and grease. If you are not the type to work on your own bikes, and you figure this bike is worth, say, $200-250 if it wasn't totally overhauled, then maybe it's worth something like $350 in this state to you? I'd try and talk them down if you really like it, and see what happens.
