Hey guys, I've been in the BMX scene and have been working on bikes for years, but I'm pretty much a n00b when it comes to road bikes. I love the look and feel of the old lugged frames, especially the old Valite frames from Fuji, much more so than any more current frame I have ridden, despite the obvious loss of technological advancements. I'm fresh out of school, and in late summer, a few friends and I are riding bikes for a few hundred miles to go on vacation, and I intend to ride my Fuji (we'd have a support car with a full toolset and spare tubes/tires, I can take any bike apart and re-assemble it). It is in rideable shape right now (all regreased and tuned), but I'm a bit iffy on the wheels. They aren't in awful shape, but aren't exactly true either, and given the age of the wheels, are they worth working on? They are 27" UKAI alloy rims with STEEL spokes, some of which have started to corrode, and definitely need to be worked on. They *could* potentially make the 400+ mile trek, but I'd say it isn't worth the risk, considering I'd have to re-build an entire wheel on the side of the road holding everything up. Should I either buy a new spoke set and rebuild the wheels, or just leave them at home for shorter distance rides and get a 700c cassette wheelset that is ready to go? The Dia-Compe brakes are ready to go for either option, there is enough slack on the caliper for me to adjust the brake pads to either rim. I'm willing to invest in this bike, not just because of sentiment, but also because of feel and comfort, even though it has been described by some as "lighting a 50 cent cigar with a 100 dollar bill." Also, there is a 1984 Club Fuji for sale in my area, all stock components, not too far off from what I currently have component wise, they're asking 400$, but that is preposterous, considering that it was a solid 380$ back when it was new. Any idea of the value? Decent paint job, by no means mint. Other than the fact that I love these frames, they were also advertizing some interesting schtick about it being a rare special edition "Professional Model", referring only to the paint, not listing any of the components. More than likely BS, It looks like the standard 1984 Club Fuji, but was there any sort of special edition for this year/model that gives it such a pricetag? I would definitely not pay this much for it, but I have interest.

Bring a few spare spokes for the front and for your rear drive side and non-drive side, plus the freewheel removal tool and a large adjustable wrench. Pack it in the support car. With several friends, you'll be able to hold the wheel (vertically) while breaking the freewheel loose to gain access to drive side flange if necessary.

True the rims and ride them on your Expree. You'll be fine. That's my advice.

The Club - not a bargain at $400, unless it's been very well maintained and recently re-built fully.
