I do agree with OJ (not the murderer) that the price is a bit steep. While Motos are nice bikes I don't think they generally go for that.

It's a Grand Record, which is sculpted from that magic metal, Reynolds 531. I paid far less for my GR, but it is gold, not red & black. Another comp, a recently purchased similar vintage Raleigh Super Course, Reynolds 531 main triangle, cottered Stronglight crank, but Nuovo Record shifters, FD, RD, plus nice rims, and a crusty Brooks B17, was only $215. Not bought in metro NYC area, so maybe a 50% adjustment up in value to low $300s.

I know NYC is a super hot market but that would still be far too rich for me.

The picture is not very high rez, but it does look like condition is good and original, and that's where the last bit of vintage value comes from, in my opinion. That is, a certain bike that is a 8 or 9 out of 10 on condition might be worth say $300-400 but one that's a 10 out of 10 could be worth not $50 more but a hundred or two. To the right buyer that is, someone who wants one of THOSE and the BEST ONE that can be found. And as many of us collecting old steel bikes like that have a bit of disposable income, and these bikes are cheap compared to vintage cars or wooden boats, what's $200 more to get the BEST ONE?

The GR is a classic, a model everyone seems to like, but they are not rare, so $700 seems really high unless this one is in like-new condition. Even then it would take the right buyer to come along, someone who has to have it and NOW. Generally, even in a hot market, I'd think $500 was a strong price for a very nice one.

You obviously know what to look for. A nice bonus would be if the wheelset had Campy hubs, but most likely those are the original Maillard Competitions. The bike does look very nice, maybe it's that 1 out of 100 Garage Queen.

MIKE Wolf paid 35 for it and sold it for 350.

It has a 531 frame with campy dropouts and many campy components,,the bike is too sweet,,,700 is too high,,it looks in good shape. I bought one brand new somewhere around 1973,,I ended up using it for about 13 years and traded it in when I bought another bike,,big mistake. It is a Motebecane Grand Record not to be confused for most of the lesser quality stuff they made of which I owned also.

In good shape with all the original parts,,and that looks like it,,,tops would be 500..

By the way I paid 450 for it new,,and was going to by a Puegot PX10 BUT fell in love with Motobecane when I saw it.

Very nice upper mid level to high reatail French bike from the early 70's these top out around $500 unless there is something truely exceptional which I don't see.

One of the nicest riding bicycles I ever owned was a near identical Grand Record. It was brown and black and a little bit too big for me. Had that bike fit well, I would have kept it. I did, however, sell the bicycle several years ago, when markets were hotter, for $500.00.

I would pay that much in a heartbeat to get a GR in really good shape and the one presented looks pretty good to me. Anyway, that is my two cents and, sadly, or not, I have to settle for my Grand Jubilee, which is also a very nice bike but not nearly as nice as the Grand Record...
