Peugeot Mixte Inquiry

My wife and I are looking at this Peugeot Mixte on the Portland CL:

Blue Peugeot

The pictures leave much to be desired, but after looking at catalogs for an hour or so I'm thinking it's early 70s. Anyway, $300 seems pretty steep until I consider the panniers. We're looking to buy some anyway, and they seem like a pricey item.

Assuming good condition but could use a tune-up, where would you price it? Let's also assume it doesn't have the AVA "death stem" I read about.
Thanks in advance!

Nice condition and looking ready to ride helps. But at the end of the day it is a PUG with steel wheels cottered crank with lausy gearing touring wise Iffy simplex shifters. Even in Portland $120 bike with $30 of extras on the bike extras only get 30 cents on the dollar or less on used bikes. Nice bike but way too much money and I doubt the owner will come down price wise.

Bike about $150. Panniers maybe $20 - they are nothing special, kind of ugly.

I see a white Peugeot mixte posted 9/4 in NE Portland for $80, I'd grab that one and bring it by CityBikes, Velocult or Community Cycling Center if it needs work (that you can't do).

Note that now the rain's started, bike prices will start sliding on CL. I'd still pay $80 for a complete Peugeot mixte though.

The U-18 above is a worth at least $225, if not more, in a coastal urban market. Mixte's get more money than diamond frame equivalents. I have sold freshly reconditioned Peugeot Mixte's for $225-$325 in the last 12 months. I would just want to make sure that the hubs, headset, and BB bearings were serviced in the last 3-5 years.

+1 With the Oracle. I sold a 1974 Peugeot mixte, fully refurbished, here in Hooterville for $210, and it sold fast. Adjust upward for red hot Portland market, plus fenders and panniers.

I can sell a 1970s Peugeot mixte, with steel rims, cottered crank, and high ten steel frame, for MORE than I can get for a 1980s Japanese mixte with alloy wheels and crank, and cromo frame. Does it make sense to me? No. But thats the market.

And aesthetically, they can be knockouts!

Thanks for the help, gents.

One thing mentioned above that works for me is scheduling. We're not far from months of nonstop rain, so I figure that will do wonders for my negotiating position.

I agree that the seller on the blue on seems pretty set on price. $500?! Either she's even less bike-savvy than I am or money's no object. Thanks for the tip on pannier selling value as well.

I was drawn to the white Peugeot at $80 myself... my wife doesn't dig the apparently chewed-up paint though.

Thanks again. We'll see how things proceed.

If the CL seller bought the bike at one of Portland's vintage boutiques, $500 isn't out of the question.

Many BF male vintage enthusiasts drool over chrome lugs, Italian heritage frames, Campagnolo, Reynolds 531, Columbus SL, and anything celeste green.

Women vintage followers on the other hand, want what Velouria features, French mixte bikes and Dutch bikes. It has been more than a year since I have picked up a Motobecane mixte at a reasonable price, and +10 to what Thrifty Bill says about Peugeot U-18's with cottered cranks. The bike must look absolutely fresh: clean, shiny, great paint, and no rust are imperative. Then you get great feedback, like on the blue PH6 above:

"I have been thinking about connecting with you to let you know how happy I am with the bike. It is exactly what I was looking for and I really appreciated all you did to help facilitate the sale from afar. Thanks!"

You bet! Not a fountain of info, that would be T-Mar, WRK101, Auchencrow, or Scooper. Just a guy who knows how to dress up a mixte! Also, sold a few bikes here and there.

+10 $500 from a boutique shop is very believable. Around here, rule of thumb, shops charge 50% to 75% more than market value from a private seller. Check out some of the on line store front prices sometimes, like the guy in Louisville, KY. Not exactly red hot Portland market, yet high prices.

Here's an example:

Stem shifter, Schwinn World Sport: $325

https://www.oldbikesbelong.com/projec...rld-sport-325/

Smaller sized World Sport: $375!!!:

Miyata Sport Ten: $325

The seller was nuts to pay $500 for that mixte; even in PDX. This is just a noob thing, getting taken advantage of.

I lived there for five years, and wouldn't want to own anything with steel rims, period. It's not Seattle, but it's still pretty wet there. Tough to negotiate with someone like that. They probably don't want to admit their mistake and cut their losses.

Recently, I was searching Seattle/Tacoma CL for a campus bike for my daughter. I saw lots of good candidates, mixtes and step-throughs, in the $50 - 175 price range there.
