Sturmey Archer 3sp Hub

A few months ago at an Automotive type swap meet, I acted on impulse and bought this SA AW 3speed hub. The date code is 77. I have never owned a 3 speed and always wanted one as a kid. Now I'm doubting that I will build a bike around it and it is surplus to my needs. I think I paid too much, but I will hold onto that info until I get a few replies.

Well, you can look on your local craislist.org for what 1977 Raleigh Sports and LTD-3 go for, and what Schwinn 3 speeds go for; if you buy one of those you get the SA AW 3 speed hub already laced into a wheel, plus the cable and shifter. A bare hub should be a fraction of the cost of a complete bicycle with the hub.

Thanks folks. I paid $15 for it so I should be able to get that back at least. And it could use a cleaning.

$10 to $15 is about right for a 77 hub.

Yeah they don't fetch much! But, boy are they reliable once set up! Plus you can obtain replacement bits from multiple sources. Did it come with a shifter and cable parts? The period correct thumb shifters are likewise, bullet proof. The cable run you use (w/pulley and "fulcrum clamp" or full housing run w/ chainstay cable stop) are readily available, too. I would avloid non Sturmey Replacement Shifters, though. They aren't quite as bullet proof.
