    Fisher Advance, decent?

going to look at this fisher MTB after work. it is quite cheap, and its for an (small) older guy at my work who has been asking me to get him something to ride. Any one know if this bike is notoriously bad or something? at the price its going for though it doesnt really matter. just curious if any one has additional info...

the only visible decals are "FISHER" on the DT and "Advance" on the TT:

I'm sure it is fine. It is a Gary Fisher bike from early 90's probably. Found a 1993 Gary Fisher Advance on Bikepedia listed at an original MSRP of $430.00. CrMo frame, decent components. Will make a good rider for your friend and it is cool that you are helping him with it.

Should be a decent solid bike. it predates trek gobbling up and ruining Fisher bikes. I don't recall Fisher making cheap bikes then so this would be on par with say a Rocker Hopper level bike.

IMHO the only weak spot on these bikes was the 1 1/4" steerer. I like the concept but I always thought there should have been more thread engagement on the topnut. If your friend isn't looking for a super off road machine this should not be an issue.

Yup at an asking price of 30 bucks my hopes arent too high. My co workers request being: " a bike...just something..?" He's like 50 something and just wants to get some physical activity in on the weekends, this seemed to be the ticket. For now I will just do the standard cleaning and re greasing etc. thanks for the feedback guys.

The Advance was the "bottom-of-the-line" model, at least for a while, but all Fisher's were very good bikes including this one. I have an Advance, it's my daily commuter and a great bike.

$30 is a steal on a chromoly steel Gary Fisher. New 26 X 1.5 road slicks will make that bike ride smooth as glass on paved roads and the strand, or whatever you call it in OC.

So I ended up paying 25$ for it, and I spent about 130$ setting it up with tires/tubes, chain, cables/ housing, handle bars, pedals, grips, seat, lights... and a mini pump and patch kit. I am a little peeved at my co worker for having taken delivery a couple weeks ago and he hasn't gone for a ride yet! But from when I gave it a test ride; it felt like a nice quick little cruiser.
