I am looking to buy a road bike for general use/ commuting to and from my university. I am trying to find a road bike on craigslist and so far I have found two possibles. I wanted to get everyones take on how much these bikes are worth. My favorite is the Trek and I would love to get it but I want to make sure I am not overpaying.

1. 1991 Trek 2300 Carbon
Asking Price: $200
Details: None given aside from size of the bike but the pictures show a speedometer and the bike seems to be in good condition. Please let me know if you think that is a fair price for the bike.

2. Fuji Sagres (Unknown year although I think it's a 1987) Seller says to give a reasonable offer. I came here to see what would be a fair value. Here is a picture.

There seems to be quite a difference in the sizes of these two bike, you would need to determine what size frame you need before buying anything, lest you end up buying again if what you buy doesn't fit.

The Trek, I don't know, the old carbon frames I have no clue to value, but I'd not use carbon as a commute bike, steel can be roughed up a good bit more by some accounts.

The Fuji loks to eb in good shape, but with that pic who can tell. 100-150, but very dependent on the condition and ridability in its current condition.

Thanks, if the fuji is worth that much than I think I will definitely shoot for the Trek and it is not fully carbon from my understanding. It was only called that because the fork was carbon composite or something. I'm not 100% sure but I know it's not a full carbon frame. Also, the trek ad says 54 inch? Not sure if that is right but I figured I would see how the bike fit me when I went to check it out.

Thanks for the help. I emailed the guy selling the Trek but no response so far. I am going to try and get more details from him about the bike. It seemed like a very nice bike from the picture but I am really only just starting to get into biking and have no clue on how to evaluate the value of bikes. I will be sure to ask about the drivetrain.

The probable reason you haven't heard from the Trek guy yet is because he probably sold it already. A bike that nice at 2 bills isn't going to last long. Similar situation came up locally and I responded to an ad within an hour, but was #2 in line. Guy said he had a dozen people lined up to purchase. That's just how it goes.

BTW, Fuji's are nice bikes too. Find out more about it and we can chime in. Good luck!

Thanks guys I didn't respond with any questions. I just sent an email asking if the bike was still available and if he was free to meet today. He didn't respond but we'll see. The ad is still up and it was posted 3 days ago. Hopefully I didn't miss it. I guess I'll keep y'all updated on whether or not he responds.

The Trek CF bike looks to be a very good deal at $200, as aside from what looks like a well cared for/clean frame, it sports what looks like to be a modernish (brifters/indexed) good relaible shimano group on it (105?, 600?) that also looks to be in good order from the pics.
If it is available, RUN and buy it asap! The good thing too is that these Trek CF bikes weren't the first generation CF designs, so a lot of lessons learned from other manufacturers who built CF bikes before them, was most likely applied to the design (Things like CF tube/Al lug isolation materials to minimize electrolytic corrosion from dissimilar materials that damages the joint glue bonds.). In any case, before you hand over the money to the seller, do a good inspection of the lug tube joints to see if there is any sign of separation or corrosion. A test ride can certaibnly also help reveal if there is any problems with any of the bonded joints on the bike.

I have been watching that Trek for 4 days, trying not to contact him. I have to many bikes now. If the brifters work its worth more than asking price. I think it's a 94, cf tubes with aluminum lugs. I know a guy that has one and loves it, his came all Campy equipped.
I think it's already sold at that price, he just hasn't deleted the ad.

I thought they had phased out the lugged carbon models in favor of OCLV by '94 ? could be wrong though

Well since no one else is offering up values on the Fuji Sagres, if it is fully clean, good paint, no frame rust and refurbished, with new cables, housing, tires, brake pads, bar tape, and all four bearing sets, $200-$250, depending on local market.

If it is just a 27 year old garage queen, with original everything, half that amount tops! I have bought them in beater condition for as little as $40 and free at the curb in rusty condition, needing a repaint.

Just looked it up on vintage Trek site, 1998 last year of that style of frame.
