    1984 (first year) Schwinn Sierra

    This is a chromoly frame with hi-ten sloping crown fork. 21" inch. I was hoping for a lugged frame, being that this was the first year Schwinn made mountain bikes, but this model is welded or brazed (not sure on which). Only a 10 speed setup (two crank rings, not three). The wheels have been switched out two some very inexpensive steel hub alloy rim bolt on jobs. Paint and parts look like average wear for the age of the bike. I am considering it for a drop bar conversion (though I would like a 3 ring crank instead). How much would you give for something like this? Thanks in advance.

    i wouldn't give much personally. i would want to start with a bike that was closer to what i was looking for. New wheels and crank can get expensive. As a flip, sounds like $25...maybe

    The king sting 5 is cool; something that I would think one would have to keep as "factory" as possible to retain value and collector interest. The owner wants more than 30 for the Sierra and thinks the "upgrade to Walmart Schwinn" wheels are better than the originals. It seems like a uphill climb.

    Vintage MTBs are like buses, miss one and another comes around 15 minutes later. Sierra was a good model, but not something super desirable or special. Myself, if I was looking for a Sierra, I would look a couple of years later where they had roller cam brakes and black chrome frame. Now if it was an early Stumpjumper, like the two the Oracle picked up, that would be different.
