Possible 1970 Raleigh Gran Sport/Grand Sport/Grand Sports...help identifying?
This bike was purchased new in 1970, and I cannot find much information on it or its rarity. I'm working to get it in riding condition, and just was curious as to what I have.
The closest match I found was on Sheldon Brown's Retro Raleighs Gran Sport page here:
Retro Raleighs: The Gran Sport
Mine looks almost exactly like that one, but I can't be sure. Also, it matches the model in the 1970 Raleigh catalog as a Gran Sport.
Any help identifying this would be great.

Looks like a Gran Sport to me(says so on the top tube). Not too many of those around. Nice Zeus crank, AVA stem. Very, very nice.
Has the nice Huret long cage derailleur and shifters too.

Heck I like the head badge in the first pic. Are these pics of the same bike? The colors don't look the same to me . . .

I thought it was strange that is says Grand Sports on the top tube. I just struggle to find one like this. I've never seen another one.

They are of the same bike. It might be the lighting, I moved the camera but not the bike to take a picture of the badge.

From the catalogue page in the RetroRaleigh link (that you provided), you may have found an example of the Grand Sport model that Sheldon claimed was never actually produced. Congratulations, you may be the first person I know of to prove Sheldon wrong.......

Great! How rare is this, then? I'm just wondering how many were actually produced and survived.

the inner cw on the zeus competition chainset has a 151mm bcd and interchanges with the campag of that dimension. it has the advantage of going down to a smallest size of 43T.
the five pin bcd does not interchange with that of other five pin chainsets however.

Hi, I have just acquired an identical frame set but in 25.5". It has only the original headset and seat post though, but is also a 1970 Grand Sports. Same colour scheme and chrome as MTK (gold and black over chrome). Mine is in worse condition, but not bad. I will be able to post some pics in a couple of weeks. I am in Sydney Australia, but I expect the frame was imported from the USA at some time.
