CDL Italian Built. Any thoughts on age and value?

Dug this one out of a garage last Sunday afternoon. Wiped the top layer of dirt off of it...but that's all I've done so far....

Can't find much about CDL...other than I am told that they were a bicycle importer out of Dallas.

Campagnolo Valentino rear derailleur, older Suntour front derailleur that I assume is a replacement, plastic Grand Prix saddle, Balilla brakes, 3T stem, Gnutti hubs...

What can you tell me about this one? THANKS.

A house brand? Interesting. Is there any information on the tubing? What kind of dropouts does it have? Can you post some picks of the dropouts and lugs?

I suspect it is something from the '70 Bike Boom but likely something nicer than your basic Royce Union or OU=8 Peugeot.

Biachigirll spot on like always.

suspect letters actually cdi rather than cdl. perhaps transfer is smudged? upper case i looking like lower case l?

cdi was curry distributors of dallas texas.

they had house brand bicycles during the boom.

these were reportedly manufactured by gino liotto.

discussed here -

Thanks so much for the tips and leads. Curry is new information to me. Appreciate it.

I was thinking the Valentino derailleur and the stem might point to a little earlier than the boom...maybe late 60s? Thoughts?? (I'm clearly new at this and trying to learn so really appreciate the help!)

this definitely an early '70's machine. stem you mention is model 3TTT turiste. its mount appears slightly high. you might wish to check that there is enough down in the steerer for safety.

the bicycle's front valentino pushrod derailleur has been replaced with a suntour spirt parallelogram model.

hubs look to be gnutti five-piece model. the right hand flange of the rear hub has a tendency to work loose. when this this is the case the freeewheel will appear to wobble about its axis.

bottom bracket and chainset look to be omg.

bits employed to construct the frame are from agrati.

how does the rectangular transfer near the top of the seat tube read?

THANKS! The knowledge on this forum is mind-blowing.

Rectangular transfer says "Made in Italy".

hello again alexander lv,

you inquired as to value. as she sits i would estimate 70-90$ in your market. values can vary widely with location. if you were in a "hot" market such as vancouver or san francisco it would likely be more.

if, otoh you have a mind to place it into service then the most important matter would be the size vis a vis the planned rider. if a poor fit nothing else matters very much and it might as well be sold. free up that garage space for a cycle which can actually be used.

located this entry of an example which looks to be the same model as your bicycle -

oldroads.com

hope this has helped you some; best wishes with the cycle.

Thanks again! This is very helpful! I have been buying quite a few old road bikes recently and I think you're "in the right ballpark" on the value here in the Kansas City area.

Yes - I think I'll put back to riding shape. This one will probably get ridden every now and then on a 10-15 mile Sunday afternoon recovery ride after a hard Saturday effort on a carbon fiber "steed". Totally agree on the size issue.

Thanks for the link to the other bike! Thanks again for your help.

found the address for c.d.i.

did some business with them back in the mid to late '70's.

a spot of digging produced the old invoices.

Curry Distributors Incorporated

3115 Garden Brook

Dallas, TX 75234

P.O. Box 2755

Dallas, TX 75221

they were still going in 1979. seemed to disappear in the early 1980's; perhaps a casualty of the recession of 1982. do not know the business' startup date.

Looks like Bianchi giral pretty much nailed it on this one. The valantino components, style of stem , Mafac brakes, fancy but lesser lug work with chrome drops front and rear all seem to say mid level Importer branded Italian bike circa 70-73 or so. Considering the somewhat unkown brand name and somewhat rough condition $150 or so in value as pictured. Nice bike but it really needs the right buyer who is willing to put another $150 or so into it to get into nice running shape.

This is fascinating information about the bike. Thanks so much! I really appreciate it. The bike is currently in pieces being cleaned as I have time. It was/is REALLY a mess. We'll see what I have when I'm done cleaning and get it put back together. Thanks again for this information!

ran across this Curry bicycle. it is clearly British and perhaps manufactured by Hercules. model name is Elizabethan and it is dated as 1961. since it is a contract build it could have been made for the same Curry discussed in this thread. no information one way or the other...
