1983 Trek 700 followed me home

I have been checking Craigslist for a donor bike with 6400 Tri Color crankset to complete my Schwinn Circuit build. I was lucky enough to be the first responder to this very low priced bike. The owner said he brought it with him to Chicago when he moved here from Minnesota. His friend built it for him so he has no idea what the frame is. In his CL ad he guessed 1984 Trek 610. He is now moving to Hawaii and is selling all of his stuff. He did not seem the type to be a thief and the neighborhood he lives in is upscale so the bike is legit in my opinion. The bike was a commuter so it has some scrapes and surface rust but should clean up nicely.

I would have bought the bike even if it was a 400 with the components it has on it. My research leads me to the bike being a 1983 Trek 700. Nothing is original to the bike but everything is great. This leaves me with many options. Rebuild the bike correct, keep it as is even though I have the Circuit with almost the same build, or part it out and keep the cranks. So I would like to get an idea what the frame and components are worth to weigh all my options?

Shimano 6400 Tri Color cranks , FD & Rd and brake Calipers. RSX Brifters. Stronglight Delta Headset , ITM Stem and Super Training Bars. Matrix rims laced to Specialized hubs with a 7 speed cassette. Not sure what bottom bracket yet.

Nice find. I wish the guy hadn't moved from Minneapolis so I could have bought it.

Choices would have been so much easier if I had not sold off my Superbe Pro FD & RD last week. I could just swing the Superbe Pro crankset over to the Trek and put the 600 Crank on the Circuit. kicking myself now.

Lots of Character there.....

condition will hold down the value on the frame and parts. Pretty much a wash on part-out vs. whole. Thinking $200-ish, depending on frame ID.

Yeah its a bit ruff. The rust on the brake springs and bolts should come off. The anodized parts look great on the calipers, RD and crankset. The bike needs a complete overhaul and cleaning. It is a full 531 Reynolds frame so it would be worth fixing up.

Borrow a set of tires/rims from another in your fleet and ride it for a bit. You will love it!

I personally like hanging onto and riding the vintage bikes that fit, when I get them for a song. There is something extremely satisfying about a $25-$75 vintage 80's Schwinn/Pany, Cannondale, Motobecane, or Trek 520.

That`s what I am debating in my head. I have a nice set of wheels I can throw on the bike. Tri Color hubs laced to Campagnolo Omega rims just hanging on a wall. I guess I could build it up as a sport - light touring bike. It has mounts for a rear rack. This would be so much easier if it was not my size. LOL

I also have a Suntour V GT Luxe long cage RD , FD and Suntour Clamp on down tube shiufters sitting in my parts box. I have some nice Dia Compe brakes and levers that I could use as well. Throw a 14 to 34 cassette on the back and the Superbe Pro Cranks with 53 39 rings on it and I have a good light touring bike. If I find a triple Crankset down the line, bonus.

Well I was wrong. Looked just like the 83 700 in the catalog. According to the Vintage Trek website, the bikes serial number makes it a 24 inch 1981 710.
