older mongoose?
Mongoose City Bike Singlespeed/ Fixed Gear
thinking about snapping this up as a winter commuter. i like that it has cantis for big tires, will take fenders+rack, and appears to be AL.
i think from the threaded HS that it's about a ~2000 vintage. was mongoose still making quality bikes at that point? anything anyone can tell me about this bike would be appreciated!
edit: the threaded headset probably doesn't mean anything--i realize that cheap bikes still come with them.

Relatively low end MTB not so great SS conversion. Only worth about half the asking price I wouldn't even consider this one myself unless it was basically free.

They have winter in East Bay? That's news to me. Every December it's bloody warm in the SF area. Also, why would you want a single speed in Berkeley, unless you only go north and south along the bay, and not east and west towards the UCB campus?
I think the subject bike is a hybrid and I concur with Thrifty Bill, worth about 1/2 the asking price.

This kind of response is exactly why people avoid forums like this one. Just answer the question about the bike and shut up about the rest. Thanks to everyone else.

People avoid forums like this because they don't like to hear the truth.
Not every bike is a home run no matter what you may see on American Pickers.
I love it when people post a rusty UO-8 and think they have an actual PX-10 that was rode by Bernard Thevenet in the TDF...lol
I lived in California for 30yrs and there is really no winter, not compared to the Dakotas'...lol

i can definitely handle the truth about a bike--that's why i'm here. i just don't appreciate being told what i should or shouldn't do otherwise. if i want a winter bike in CA, i'll build it. and if i want to ride a fixed gear back and forth between downtown oakland and cal, i will!
oddjob2 needs a lesson on the US constitution. i'm not a gov't agent so the first doesn't apply. i'm canadian and even i know that. love getting civics lessons from citizens unaware of what their own constitution says! some might say it's a particularly american problem.

Gramphighgate,
you are going to do
what you are told to do
and like it, or you will have to ride a huffy in the long, arduous, brutal and dangerous Ca winter....lol
A friend of mine told me that all Canadians look like roadies for Meatloaf, is that true**********lol

Not a bad beater bike base. Mongoose was still making kick ass bikes in 96 but this was entry level $350 msrp.
I'd maybe go $100 but things can be higher in SF.
