1970"s Schwinn Raleigh Nottingham
..Ok Please redirect me if Im doing this wrong, but I'm new to this group. I was down in my inlaws basement and found my mother inlaw's Schwinn. Its a Schwinn Raleigh Nottigham on it....It looks like it has a 4 digit number on a sticker on it. Its from the very early 70's and its a 3 speed I believe. Where do I find a serial # or other important info on this?

No such thing. It ccould be a Raleigh with a Schwinn saddle on it. Take it outdoors and shoot some photos from the right side. Post to a photo host and post the links here.

oddjob2..I will have to take it outside this week....Could it be just a Schwinn Raleigh? Its green and looks to be in pretty good condition besides the dry rotted tires. Is there a place to look for a serial number or a more specific model #?

No; it couldn't be a Schwinn Raleigh. Schwinn's history is as a Chicago headquartered American company and Raleigh is a British company, so it's one or the other. Schwinn never had a Raleigh model.

A Schwinn Raleigh bike would be the equivalent of a Ford Chevy car.

...which is kinda interesting, because back in the day, Schwinn was pretty dictatorial about their dealers selling other marques.
I'm not sure when that changed, or if it only applied to certain dealerships. Nice step through Raleigh Sports.....shiny.

It could a Raleigh taken in trade on a new Schwinn and resold by the Fairfield Schwinn dealer, but it's definitely a Raleigh.

A small town shop may have had to toe the Schwinn line but big full-line dealers maintained a close relationship with Chicago but ran their business as they saw fit.
The same shop sticker was on all of the Schwinn Pixies, Raleigh Sports or Motobecane Mirages that we sold.

I think Were gonna bring it to the local bike shop and see if its worth anything to them...Otherwise its just going to stay in the inlaws basement

Most Schwinn stores were single line but not all. The local shop in the 60's -80's , W.L.A. Bike & Hobby sold Peugeot, Volks Cycle and later a BMX brand. The majority of the floor was Schwinn though. Another local shop did lose their franchise because they did not order enough adult Schwinns and probably did not keep their floor percentage high enough.

With a handle orangetractor, unlikely in NYC. But the Brooks saddle is easily worth a Grant portrait on its own.

The LBS is either not going to want it, or will offer you very little money for it (and then probably discard it except for the saddle).

Or more, depending on where you are and the condition of the bike. My LBS sells reconditioned Sports models for $500. Of course, a bike shop deserves more than a private seller, because of overhead and liability.
