Nishiki Olympic 12 Mixte

I stumbled into this bike and thought it was nice enough to take a small gamble. I was actually shocked, because I don't find decent, or even good bikes at affordable prices these days. I'm planning on selling it, but I can't decide whether to sell it as a whole or part it out. The frame is interesting to me, it's got the twin tube mixte design. It has suntour forged dropouts. It's Tange 5 steel and the paint and decals look to be in pretty great condition. I'm not sure if mixtes are as sought as they were as I have not sold anything for a long time.

The parts are not as sellable. The Sugino GT crank is nice, it's got some drillium rings and is in very nice shape. There is a Shimano 600 caliper, but the other is dia compe. There is a Huret Multito on the front wheel. Derailleurs are suntour ARX. Wheels are sunshine hubs and Araya rims.

Any guidance or advice is welcome.

I recently picked up a similar bike, frame wise. It had steel rings, seatpost and dropbars. I swapped those out for alloy bits and changed to clamp on DT shifters. I also changed to a swept back bar w/MTB style brake levers.

Yours looks like it will clean up very nicely with a minimal investment. I like mixte personally, but I dont have much luck flipping them.

A frameset in that condition and color might do well on ebay........perhaps as well as a complete refurbed locally

What's with the cancerous black blob by the chain on the rear stay?

In an urban market, my experience and target for a fully overhauled Nishiki mixte with new consumables would be $200 +/- 12%. Below sold in April 2014 for $225. YMMV

These are pretty good for mixties. Above entry level. I bought one years ago for my girlfriend. Got her riding.

I would agree with Oddjob with some new consumables and a little cleanup this bike should sell fairly easy in a bigger market for $200-225. This one is a little nice than most of the mixtes you see, forged dropouts and fairly nice alloy components and wheels. Yet with mixtes you tend not to get much of a premium for nicer ones fixed up and ready to ride the low end ones get almost as much as the nicer ones.

My experience as well. I see them listed on Chicago CL for cheap, even in the middle of summer. Not much demand for them here. In fact there was a beautiful Austro- Daimler mixte listed for months last summer. Price started at like $280. It kept being reduced until it sold, I think at $120 or $140.

Thanks all. Yeah, the blob on the chain stay is just electrical tape. I sold a mixte maybe six years ago and had about the same experience. It's jut been so long since I found anything with flip potential.

Looks like a great bike! I just sold my Nishiki Olympic 12 for $160. Awesome ride, but too tall for me. That mixte must be pretty fun and light huh?

I just restored a Nishiki Mixte Olympic 12 swapping in 20 year old Campagnolo parts and other odds and ends with new presta Sun rims, still 27" with new Panasport Passella 1 and 1/4 tires. It's a very fine bike to ride, very comfortable and safe for riding wet winter trails coated in fir needles and fallen leaves/limbs. The way it turned out I am quite excited about mixing old and new and creating something that extends the limits of good steel frames. Plus, with the water bottle mounted on the handlebars, no mouthful of fir needles anymore from the water bottle on the down tube. Well worth the investment and time, a keeper ride for the years ahead.
If you want to see this bike look for "The Winter Bike" in the vintage bike forum.
