Is this a fair trade, from both sides?

This Pinarello has been floating around CL for a couple of months, it looks perfect size for me, I have offered a trade for my Bilato built Marin with 3x9 Veloce. The stem makes it cramped although I really like the Ike otherwise. The Pinarello is a shimano 600 equipped Catena Lusso Would this be a wise move? What would you do.

The Marin

The prospective Pinarello

Sorry, I can't answer your question. But why don't you just install a longer reach stem? Pulling off the brifters and re-wrapping the bar isn't hard.

Jim, that has been on the cards for this bike, I even have a nice Cinelli stem for it. I also love the ride quality of the too small Pinarello I am doing for my wife. I think I want a Pinarello for me too, it's a case of N+1 striking without actually having a +1.

The Marin is probably the better bike, but the Pinarello is the classier one. I'd trade for the Pinarello in a heartbeat, even if it's not a good deal.

I'd make the trade, depending what it looks like in person.

There are no perfect trades (50/50). Invariably, one person is favored. Realize you are avoiding the additional headache of selling your bike. That's worth something. Myself, I would prefer a lugged steel Pinarello anyway. Verify the rear hub is not Uniglide. A lot of that era 600 were Uniglide, which can be a bit of a PITA. If it is Uniglide, you might get additional consideration (i.e.., $$) in the trade.

I think it's pretty fair...they each have a different kind of value, but I think it's fair. Even on $$$, I think it's pretty even.

What is the asking price for the Pinarello?

According to Blue Book
1999 Marin Vicenza - New and Used Bike Value

The Marin Vicenza is worth $400 to $500... which is close.
The Pinarello Catena Lusso is probably about the same. Give or take a bit.

HOWEVER,
The two bikes will be very very different bikes.
It looks like the Pinarello has sewups on it. Are you using it as a commuter?
DT shifters. Probably 12 speed??? Freewheel.

You've got a front triple and a large cassette on the Marin. The Pinarello misses all those super low gears.

I believe the old bikes are very viable (I own and ride one), but it wouldn't be my choice to jump from a late 90's bike to a mid 70's bike, unless I really wanted the 70's bike for some reason.

Be sure to get the Pinarello owner dig up the toe clips! Those are around a la carte, but you will not like the going rate.
Otherwise, review the cassette knowing what you will be getting but with the two singular images shown and my comments, worth the barter.

I believe the Pin is mid eighties, indexed 600. Not sure wether it's clinchers or tubs though.

There's an insane deal on an SLX record equipped Pinarello in the "are you looking for one of these" thread right now. Looks about your size.

The trade seems fair the bikes are in the same ballpark value wise. The bikes are both very nice but different so if you each wants a significantly different bike I think both parties could come out ahead on this deal. Better than they would likely do selling then going and looking for another bike.

I mean, you're asking C&V if they like the modern or C&V Pinarello...

I'd much rather the Pinarello but that's just me.

I thought that too, but I get all confused with all the oversized tubing. It is much easier to judge the classic bikes with all the same size of tubing, and level top tubes.

So, I think the OP is right, they are close to being the same.

Seems like a fair trade...and...to me, the Pinarello is much easier on the eyes....even with that particular paint scheme...

So an update. We went through with the trade today. The Pinarello is a 58cm and the Marin is a 57cm. Both happy with what we got. So now a two Pinarello home, hopefully soon to be three.
