Olmo on CL

This seems to be underpriced. Is there something I am missing here?

Bikes: No-name LH drive track. Also ride an Exxon Graftek, a Masi, a Trek R200 or a RR Boneshaker for fun!

Fair price given the light rust on some of the components and the visible wear marks of a bike once ridden but not ridden now.

Absolutely! That is a more than fair price for the Olmo, in my opinion. Were it me, I would have gone to look/buy right away. Good deals, like this, don't last long, usually. So, are you missing something? Yup, the opportunity to buy it if you don't move quickly.

Good luck, if buying is your target and I assure you, the ride quality will make the purchase worth your while. To that add that the bicycle, maintained well, will retain its value and will even increase in value.

read the above before clicking the craigs link and thought, it must be like $300!

.

kind of a funny pic of $10 clips with at least $60 pedals in the background:

.

"is there something i am missing here?"

remember to always check the stem and seatpost no matter what it looks like or what's been said!

a story ... before picking up an '81 mondia super from a wealthy guy that seemed to really know his bikes, i asked about the stem and seatpost. he said, "you ask all the right questions. but don't worry. this bike has loads of campy grease."

i didn't check it. it was too good of a deal with all that campy bling, and the paint looked perfect. and he was incredibly charming talking about his old bike in front of his beautiful home.

i get it back to my place and realize the stem is stuck.

it's been soaking for three weeks. i finally was able to turn the stem bolt (which is aluminum). fingers still crossed!

Nice bike but minor surface rust abounds on almost all the components. Nothing that couldn't be fixed with some polishing but someone will have to put in the time.

+100 ALWAYS check to make sure the seatpost and stem are free. Check them yourself, it only takes a minute. NEVER trust a seller.

+1 The higher the price, the smaller the market.

Not that hard to drive to Hartford CT from Boston or NYC. This is a big market and the bike is priced reasonably.

While this is true, we routinely see newbies post "is this worth a 30 minute drive?" like its some kind of major trip. IMHO, people in major markets are spoiled, driving an hour away is very far for them. Meanwhile, here in Hooverville, I don't find anything within a 30 minute drive.

In addition, people in some of the big cities don't own a car. So driving somewhere is more work on their part.

In my experience, buyers are L A Z Y. They want it cheap, they want it convenient (next door if possible) and they want it held until they can pick it up (like next week, after pay day, etc.). Everyone wants a deal, but few buyers will make the effort to get one.

Exactly right DKF, which is what keeps me dealing with the thieves running the Bay. Better the devil I know than the ones I don't...too many unknowns on CL for me.

Youse guys are talking like you've driven that route a lot! I know Thrifty Bill possibly rode his GW through there recently. However, getting through Westchester Co or crossing da Bronx is no walk in the park during the summer. Figure 2.5 hours minimum from midtown NYC.
@wrk101, did you move from Hootersville to Hooverville?

I actually have driven from Boston to Hartford a lot. It's no big deal, .

Plus CT is a pretty large market in its own right.

That's the stupid spell check on my MAC. Its still Hooterville (had to type it twice due to auto correct). MAC doesn't like wheel set as one word, or frame set either.

Yes, traffic through CT was awful. I had to backtrack to visit Weirs Farm (only NPS site in CT). Took so much time I gave up on RI and headed straight to Bangor Maine at that point.

Fancy neighborhood around that Weir Farm site by the way.

Yeah, its 2 hrs to Boston and at least (on a good day) 2.5 from NYC.
Its a half hour for me.....but with 2 kids, 2 jobs, etc....I still havent been able to view it. Plus you have to coordinate with seller, etc.

I will report back .

For some reason people think those Cristophe clips are special. Some guy on my CL was trying to sell crappy steel 70's bike boom pedals with those clips for big bucks. He was under the impression that they were somehow rare or valuable.

Fancy yes indeed. During the summer of 1976, I worked as a head chef at a resort about a 1/2 hour north on Lake Waramaug. Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward stopped by for lunch one Sunday. Also, designers Bill Blass and Diane Von Furstenburg had weekend retreats in Litchfield County.

So, I went to look at this bike. Its not what I was hoping for. Lots of smaller issues, but they add up. Also, I guess I didn't get that feelling, no vibe, that I wanted to own it. Numerous rust issues, small for sure, but they catch your eye: bolts on rings are rusted, all bolts for brakes. A number of deep scrapes on the frame; someone tried to cover with paint. Brake levers were not Campy. Not the right bike for me. I'd say its a 450-500 bike.

This. Frankly I'm not sure it would sell for that on my CL. Olmo is not De Rosa...and it's not that hard to find bikes with NR gruppos for $500 and less if patient. I wouldn't think someone over paid at that number, but I wouldn't think they did especially well either.
