Is this a 1970 Schwinn Paramount/Campagnolo - Pletscher?
This could be a 1970 Schwinn Paramount. This Campagnolo bike has Pletscher components. . It was given to me after helping my friend clean her garage/attic. .
The bike shifts and seems to work fine. It needs TLC, new tires, restoration work, and it will definitely be an eye catcher once repaired. I would appreciate some help identifying the bike and an approximate value.
Thanks a lot!
Below please find some notes:
***************
The serial number isn't discernible , it appears to be scratched off decades ago; it's rusted. I can see C, apparently this is March. Other numbers are barely visible.
***********************
"20 inch frame
Sew up wheels
Missing serial number
1970's era
Pletscher rat trap & kickstand
Possibly Repainted
Campagnolo components"
***********************
"Looks like the campy lug chroming is pretty shot and needs re-chroming. But, hopefully aren't compromised. If the serial number isn't discernible (should be on the left inside rear lug) try looking at the forks and see if there is stamping there. I think the later 60s and early 70s had stamping on both. "
***********************
"I'm no expert on this stuff, but it looks to me like a late 60s or early 70s Schwinn Paramount P-10. I can't be certain about that, but it sure has a lot of the earmarks of being a Paramount. Sew-up rims (tires got 'glued' to the wheel, unlike a typical clincher (tire and tube) rim), Campagnolo 'Record' components, the infamous Schwinn "safety" brake levers (which are shown in photographs of the Schwinn catalogs), and the legwork (they look like Nervex lugs). Maybe somewhere along the line someone painted the bike? It looks to be the Schwinn color known as "Kool Orange"."
***********************
"Hi! I'm happy to help you date the bicycle and figure out what it's worth. There should be a serial number on the dropouts, where the rear is clamped to the bike. I don't think it's a 1970, because it has Nervex lugs instead of Prugnat"
***********************
"The fork steerer probably has the number, too, but the fork would have to be removed from the frame to check it.
It could be a 1970 with Nervex lugs. Prugnat were mostly used during 1969.

It looks like someone went to a great deal of trouble trying to disguise the bike's origin (defaced serial number, decals painted over, head badge removed, etc.). The bike was likely stolen at some time in its history.
Schwinn Paramounts of that era had the serial number stamped into the fork steerer, so if it's a Paramount that number may have been overlooked by whomever defaced the serial number on the rear dropout.

Yes; bike thieves are like horse thieves in the wild West, defacing any branding to conceal the original owner's identity.

Today, owners use "freeze branding" or tattooing the inside lip.
