What is this Trek 300 Elance really worth?

There is a guy locally who is selling a Trek 300 Elance. Here is the ad:

https://helena.craigslist.org/bik/5479484449.html

Is this really a $500 bike? I look at it with the Exage Light Action components and am thinking more like $250. Am I mistaken? What am I missing or is this bike in the stratosphere price wise? The guy wants cash but I refuse to overpay. I'm thinking of throwing him a reasonably fair offer on it. What do you guys think is a fair cash offer?

This guy is dreaming. It is not a $500. $250 is pushing it value wise. It could be worth that much if the bike were in excellent shape cosmetically, overhauled, and read to ride. This bike looks very clean but it has not been overhauled. I'm thinking $200 is about right. It should go near the top end of the valuation range given its condition.

Bikes: No-name LH drive track. Also ride an Exxon Graftek, a Masi, a Trek R200 or a RR Boneshaker for fun!

Recent comps of "Sold" listings on the pirate Bay suggest he's stratospheric.
Your offer is above recent averages on the Bay, and remember CL cannot command Bay prices.
This may be too cerebral for someone who advertises "12 exhilarating speeds" though. I had to chuckle on that one.

I'd agree that $200 would be a good price for this bone stock example (including circa 1986 tires, cables, ect). The frame looks to be in great shape, and the paint on Treks of this era is much better in person than it is in photos.

The problem is always going to be to talk some sense into them. It's stayed up a whole month at this price. They should have lowered it, but they haven't. That might tell you how hard the task ahead of you is.

Personally I don't waste my time unless I'm willing to pay full asking price, but I live near a bigger market with more options.

Good luck!

OK, here's the annoying part where I suggest an alternative. I think this is a 1989 Team Miyata, a high end model with Dura Ace. It's a real bargain even though it needs a front wheel.

[h=2]Miyata Frame from 1980s - $100[/h]https://helena.craigslist.org/bik/5479424467.html

This is a Miyata bike frame from the 80s. Still in great shape. Was taken care of the years. For sale for $100.

Not sure what this miyata is but it is a very solid deal at $100.

I would say $200 or so on this bike the range these actually sell at seems to be $175-300. It's just another lesser mid level 80's road bike nothing special. The 300 was Treks base model basically a entry level shop bike, really nice frames but they skimped on most of the components to keep the price down.

The Miyata for a $100 as said is a very good deal, you could pic up a nice wheel set for $100 and have a great bike for $200 or so.

That Trek 300 is very nice, I had one exactly like it for a short time . As is, I would agree with the ~$250 mark . On the Miyata , I would question what happened to the wheel, but if things checked out , I'd give $100 for it , in a heart beat .

I can't imagine it being anything but. I think you can even see the drive-side chrome stays from the angle in the CL pic.

You could easily be right. It's an awesome deal if it is a team and a very good deal if it is not. I have a '91 team miyata; it was for many years my favorite road bike.

Not in my lifetime will it be a $500 bike. Not even a Reynolds frameset.

Echo the Miyata is a great deal.

No way is that a $500 bike. I bought an '86 Trek 300 Elance last year for $75. It was on Craigslist for over a month before the guy lowered the price to a point I couldn't say no. The paint on mine isn't quite as nice, but it was in fine shape mechanically.

You can have an '86 Bianchi Squadra still in its original factory box shipped to your door for well under $500:
New in Box Blue 56cm Bianchi Squadra | eBay
New in Box Blue 59 cm Bianchi Squadra | eBay

Guys, the Miyata is already mine. The seller never took the ad down. I bought it 10 minutes after it posted. It is indeed a Team Miyata will full Dura Ace. It was equipped with tubulars... super light bike and pristine condition. It was my best bike score so far for $100.

...and my offer of $250 was accepted on the Trek. I need to go take a look in person now to make sure there are no dents or cracks.
