Miata 712... worth it?

Hi everyone! I'm looking at a bike on craigslist... this one in particular:Mint 712 Miata updated

I honestly don't know much about bikes but want to get into cycling. I've read good things about late 80's Japanese bikes and am hoping to find something reasonable (doesn't have to be the steal of the century). This bike looks to be in good condition and is upgraded with Ultegra components. However, I just don't know if this is a good deal, seems like it might be too expensive? If so, what would be a reasonable price for me to try to barter down to?

Thank you! I'm very green and am eager to learn, but I really do appreciate all the help I can get .

that's a lot of coin for an old bike, for a few hundred more you could get something brand new . . .

Miyata makes great frames and the bike is nicely equipped with STI Dura Ace and Ultegra hubs. If the frame is straight, no dings, free of oxidation, the components clean, and everything works, $400 or so would be FMV.

Frame is for a rider about 5'9-6'1"

This is a fine bike with quality components. $400 would be a reasonable price given the quality of the frame and parts.

Good looking bike, I would subtract 100 from value unless seller spells miata correctly for CL searches. Seriously that frame looks mint, almost too nice too ride! Even with the upgraded parts I would not pay more than 300 tops, for keeper. Parted out may be worth 400 but really the dura ace is nicest/most desired, that stem is cool nitto but pretty short reach though, custom probably for smaller reach rider, brakes are generic nashbar, not sure on brifters.

Aside from the hefty saddle, short stem and the handle bars ( look like some sort of randonneur bars) , I like it. Great looking frameset ! Would agree at ~ $400 .

This is a really nice frame with good paint and some nice DA components if everything works as good as it looks $400-450 is reasonable. The only minor things with the setup are the seat is a bit ugly and some more modern areo bars to match the brifters would be nice.

- Odd stem. Its really short, but its a quality stem.
- Nashbar brand brake calipers is lame. I dont understand outfitting a bike with duraace, ultegra, and 600(shifters?) components and then slapping black nashbar calipers on it.
- The handlebars arent original, but are probably a randonneur bar which will mean its a good quality. Rando bars arch up a bit and the drops flare out a bit. The bars are tilted in an odd position to my eye. Lower than they should be. Easy fix.

It is an incredibly clean bike and the components look to be in great condition.
It was mentioned you could get a new bike for a few hundred more, which is correct, but the quality and history just wouldnt be there like it is on this bike.

If the mechanical condition is as good as the cosmetic and you could get it for $400 i would consider that a great deal. If it fits and tou love it, i would guess itll be a long time before finding a bike in similar cosmetic condition with similar components.

$400 seems pretty fair for this, as others have said. It is not "a lot of coin for an old bike"...for this money, with modern bikes, you would get a much lesser bike overall...to get a decent new road bike, you should count on at least a $1000...
