Novara Randonee

Hi there I am currently on the hunt for a road bike to replace my junky big box mountain bike I have been riding on lately. I keep seeing this one on my craigslist near by. The frame should be a decent fit for me, but I was wondering what a decent offer and value on the bike would be. Thank you for any information you could give.

More like a 94 model year bike. And it was about $600 new, according to Bikepedia, not a high end bike. I have/had Shimano STX Groups on a couple of my mountain bikes (93s). STX was a relatively inexpensive group for the better than bottom bike shops bikes. Positioned below the Deore Groups. Personally, I found that while STX looked good when new, the parts did not wear very well, or very long before they needed replacement.

The bike in question does not look like it has been cared for, and it's over 20 years old, meaning that it is going to need some work, and some parts to get it ride worthy. Figure on tires, tubes, and cables at the very least, and besides cleaning that bike is going to need to have all the bearings (wheels, bottom bracket, and headset) cleaned and inspected. Make sure that the bike fits you first. If so, I'd offer $100, and maybe be willing to go to $150, if the bike's condition (paint and no dents or rust) are good. The bike is not worth $200.

I would not pay $200. You are going to have a minimum of $40-$50 in parts, plus $75-$100 in labor at the bike shop.

whew. looking at craigs in okc shows it's slim pickin's in my hometown. there's a peugeot in mesta park, a couple centurions in the metro, a bridgestone in bricktown, and a couple px10s in tulsa...

the centurions are small like the bike you posted. the others i saw worth a peek were more mid-sized.

if you want a mid-level bike, you will likely need to expand your search and budget. can't hurt to check dallas and find a reason to drive or amtrak down there.

Ad has been up for a month. If you can get it for $130-$150, it would be worthwhile.

This was kind of what I was hoping. I'll keep my eyes on it and see if I can snag it for cheaper or just keep looking. Thanks for all the insight folks. It is much appreciated.

The bike would be an excellent value at $130-$150. If I were the seller, no way I'd sell the bike at that price. $200 is FMV for a touring bike in good cosmetic shape. Yes it needs work but you can learn to do this on your own.

I paid $250 for a 1996 Bianchi volpe last winter. I would pay $200 for the novara if it were available locally. In my experience, touring bikes do not show up often and tend to command a premium. It took me a very long time to find that volpe.
