Mystery Peugeot and Nashbar bikes

Hey all, I was looking to get into biking so I looked on Craigslist and found two bikes I'm interested in. I don't know anything about bikes, so I'm not sure if either of these are worth the price they're asking for.

This is the Nashbar bike I was looking at.

And this is the Peugeot I was looking at.

Thank you for your help!

Extremely hard to evaluate asking prices when they're not posted and we don't know market you're in.

Both are low end riders that will need some maintenance to make them reliable. Of the 2, the Nashbar probably started out as the nicer bike but now it's a question of which one is in the best condition and requires the least amount of maintenance.

I'd say $50-$75 for either of them.

So, are you looking for a road bike, or a cyclocross bike? I see one of each.....

I'm looking for a road bike. I'm in Boise, ID. The Peugeot I've talked the seller down to $100. The other seller wants $200 for the Nashbar.

The question is, do they fit you? Regardless of price or condition, if the bike's frame size does not fit you, the bike will not be a good purchase for you.

You need to grab a friend who is more experienced in bike riding, and fitting than you and go check those bikes out in person.

I unfortunately don't know anyone who even owns a bike, so I'm out of luck. I looked online about fitting for bikes, and both bikes are 61 cm which from what I've read seems okay for my height. I'm 6'1" so I believe they'll both fit.

I think the Nashbar's seller will be hard-pressed to get $200 for that bike. Not that it's a bad bike, but the Nashbar name doesn't have much cachet. Non-cyclists have likely never heard of Nashbar and cyclists know Nashbar as a discount brand, which will keep down the price of used Nashbar-branded bikes. The condition of the bike's paint, its age (mid 1980s?), and the friction shifting drivetrain don't help its value. The one positive it may have in its favor (from the seller's perspective) is that it seems to be a touring bike, judging by the cantilever brakes, triple crankset, and three bottle cages. There's a market for used touring bikes, but I don't know if those buyers will settle for this bike, especially in this condition.

$100 for the Peugeot, while not the deal of the century, wouldn't be a horrible purchase if you check out the bike and find it to be in good shape. That particular model was entry level or pretty close judging by the stamped steel dropouts and claw derailleur, but it should clean up nicely and be a perfectly serviceable rider. It looks like the tires might even be recent enough replacements (Panaracer Paselas?) so that you might not need to add a set of tires to your initial investment. You'd want to do a mechanical once-over of the bike and make sure all the bearings get lubed. And check that the aftermarket kickstand hasn't been overtightened enough to damage the frame.

If you have time to wait you can do better. I recommend swinging a leg over a 58-59cm frame while you're looking.
